Hi Eugen, welcome to bleepingcomputers.

Having posted here in the W2k I assume that you are using this OS. The reason I want to clarify this is that windows 98 offers the standby mode in the shut down sequence where as W2k doesn't. The standby mode in W2k is also know as hibernation which is when the computer will "go to sleep" after being inactive for a period of time, there should not be a standby mode option when shutting down.

Read this and see if it pertains to your problem.

I have Windows 2000 pro and it does offer me the "stand by" option.

More information:I've got Windows 2000 pro Service Pack 4 (Build 2195).
Could different versions offer different options?
Sorry,I don't know of any way to disable Standby.

I also have W2k Pro SP4, and a standby option isn't available in the shut down options. I don't know what build mine is, but I can't emagine there being that much of a difference with all the updates. Strange, I'll have to look for more information on this.

I just installed W2k Pro on my new build and lo and behold standby is now one of the options in the shut down drop down menu. This is most curious seeing as I haven't had that option on any of my other two computers using the same OS.

Windows 2000 supports Stand By mode on computers that have a APM capable bios,

check and see if there is a bios upgrade that will add this feature

Win2k automatically determines what kind of bios that you have and will offer the shutdown/restart.standby/hibernate options based on this

I cant remember where in the registry that it is , but there is a change that can turnof(grey out) the standby option
