Hi,

I am getting the occasional IE popup, even though I use firefox as a browser. I have gone through the entire "prep guide" following all the instructions exactly, and I even ran a spysweeper scan and AVG scan for good measure. All these programs now come up with no problems found, except when i reboot again, i get a live365 tracking cookie. I'm stumped. Any ideas? Here's my HijackThis log:

Hi Daryl Edwards and welcome to the Bleeping Computer forums. My name is Whisperer and I will be helping you with your problem. The good news is that on the surface your log appears clean. As I am currently a Trainee in Malware removal ALL of my fixes will be checked by malware experts.

If you have not done so already, please do the initial cleanup steps in the following instructions and then post a new log: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting a HijackThis Log
  • I note that you are running HijackThis from the Desktop, it is important that it runs from within its own folder because it makes backups of the repairs in case there is a need for reversal of any procedure, these are stored in that folder.
    • Open Windows Explorer and click on the C drive
    • From the menu select New then Folder
    • Right-click the folder and rename it to HijackThis or HJT
    • Place the HijackThis.exe file there.
  • I would like you to produce a list of installed programs to assist me in any cleanup. To do this open your HijackThis
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section or Config… button, depending on how you are set up.
    • If you used the Config... option then click the Misc Tools tab
    • Select Open Uninstall Manager , a list of your installed programs will be displayed.
    • Select the Save List… button and save the file to your desktop.
  • Please post a copy of this list and an up-to-date HijackThis log in your reply together with any updated comments
  • Please advise me what Firewall you are using
GT

I also tried to get you that list of installed programs. I get as far as displaying them, but then when I click on "save list" HJT just disappears. There is no new file saved in the new HJT directory, nor is there one on the desktop. I am currently just using the windows firewall - would you recommend I use another one as well? Is this going to interfere with connecting to the network at my workplace?

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

I have had a good look through your log and need to confer with a tutor – do not be alarmed though as I have found little wrong but, you can tell me what you know about HepEng.local and do you have an Nvidia graphics card installed?

Yes I do think that you need an effective Firewall rather than the inbuilt Microsoft version; I use ZoneAlarm but I would suggest that you have a look at this tutorial on Understanding and Using Firewalls, which can be found here, before making any decisions.

Back soon

Whisperer,

I think that HepEng.local is the domain name of the network I connect to at work (I work for Hepburn Engineering).

My graphics card is an NVidia Quadro NVS 110M.

I will have a look at the tutorial, but I have used zonealarm before and was happy with it, so will likely start using it again.

I look forward to any further help you can give.

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

You have several programs that do not need to be running when Windows starts (Resource Hogs), one file about which I would like to know a bit more and, visibly, nothing causing your popups so we will move on to some more investigation and possible cleaning.

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner from here but please note that this scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the instruction on the page for installation. It will take a little while to download the components, therefore it may not be suitable for a dial-up connection – your choice.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs, click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Now we will look a bit deeper and see if anything is running that is not showing. To do this download Silentrunners.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • First you will need to extract the file(s).
    • Right click on the zipped folder and from the new menu click on Extract All
    • In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next
    • Click on Next again.
    • In the final window, click on Finish
    • You should now see the contents of the Silent Runners folder - Silent Runnners.vbs.
  • Double click Silent Runners.vbs to run it.
    IMPORTANT
Some real-time protection programs may warn you of a possibly malicious script being detected when you run Silent Runnners.vbs, allow it to run. Alternatively, disable any script blocking software you have running before you start.
  • You will receive a prompt: Do you want to skip supplementary searches? - click NO
  • Once the All Done! prompt flashes up, open the Startup Program text file that has appeared in the folder and copy & paste it into your next reply.
Finally I want to check one file that is running which could be associated with your nvidia card BUT could also be a worm. I will want you to do a search for it and ask that you make a note of the full path to the file and also the properties, right-click the file and select Properties. Make a note of the manufacturer and any pertinent details if the manufacturer is not Nvidia.

To do this we need to ensure that any hidden and system files are visible to the system.
  • Select the Start button and from the available options
  • Right-click the My Computer option.
  • Select Explore from the drop-down menu
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. from the new window
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders by clicking in the check-box to its left
  • Remove the check against Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option, again by clicking the check-box to its left.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
  • Windows does not search for hidden or system files by default so
  • Click the Start button and select Search choosing For Files or Folders
  • From the dialogue box select All files and folders and at the bottom select More Advanced Options
  • Place selection ticks in the check-boxes for
  • Search system folders
  • Search hidden files and folders
  • Search subfolders
[*]Now scroll up to the top and insert nwiz.exe in the ‘All or part of the file name:’ box and click Search
[*]When you have made a note of the path(s) of the found files then close the search dialogue box
[/list]That will do for now so please post back with
  • The fsecure report
  • The silentrunners log
  • Details of nwiz.exe IF it is not nvidia related
  • A new HijackThis log
  • Finally any further comments/observations on the computers behaviour
GT

3) “nwiz.exe” Details

When I perform the search (after making the view hidden files changes) 3 files are found:

a) nwiz.exe found in C:\i386
This one seems ok: properties show it as NVIDIA nView Wizard, Version 110.19, copyright nVidia corp.

 NWIZ.EXE-2D374245.pf found in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
There is no information in the properties about manufacturer, company, etc.

c) nwiz.exe found in C:\WINDOWS\system32
Seems to be the same as #1 (nVidia manufacturer, etc in the properties.

I really don’t think that this is the problem, everything seems to check out, but you’re the expert…

5) Misc. Comments

First off, thanks again for you help, I’m going to have to add F-Secure to my normal repertoire of scans.

I haven’t had any popups since I finished following your instructions, but they were so rare anyhow that I’m not sure that means anything yet. I’ll let you know if I get any more, as well as details about what I was doing when it happened.

Thanks again, and I look forward to your comments on the information I’ve just supplied.

Daryl.

Daryl,

I will be looking through the logs in depth later

Please rename HijackThis.exe to Daryl.exe or some other name, reboot the computer and then post me a new "HijackThis" log by its new name.

GT :flowers:

EDIT Found the firewall

Whisperer,

I just got another popup, and it happened when I opened windows explorer to "my documents". The popup was asking me to install System Doctor - I hope this helps!

Hi Daryl,

From your renamed log and confirmed by your last post, you would appear to have the latest form of a Vundo infection so we will try the conventional cure first. Please download VundoFix.exe. Have no windows open whilst the fix is running.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button. This will take a while!
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix will encounter a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Start your HijackThis and click on Scan
  • Click in the check-box to the left of each of the following entries, if found
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {871A54C1-1EB3-48bd-A879-5DBA4EF16BE6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kanmglsg.dll
    • O20 - Winlogon Notify: srvad - C:\WINDOWS\system\srvad.dll
  • With all windows closed except HijackThis, select Fix Checked
Reboot the computer and then post the contents of vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log together with any updated comments.
GT

Whisperer,

I ran the Vundo scan, and it said that Vundo was not found on my machine, so I just closed it. Should I have clicked on "remove Vundo" anyhow? Here are the contents of the logfile:

VundoFix V6.2.6

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.4.2.3

Java version is 1.5.0.6

Scan started at 5:22:15 PM 10/25/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

Beginning removal...

VundoFix V6.2.8

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.9

Scan started at 8:41:21 AM 11/16/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

____________

I'm also curious - should I still be removing the 2 items from the HJT log, even though Vundo was not found? Also, I could not find an entry that exactly matched the first item you wanted me to remove from the HJT log (shown below). Would you like me to remove the 2 entries in bold?

Also, a couple of posts ago you mentioned that I had some resource hogs in my startup that could/should be removed to speed up my bootup time (it's really slow right now) - how would I go about removing these hogs?

Thanks again!

Daryl.

Hi Daryl,

The Vundo version is quite new and is mutating each time that you reboot. No please do not remove any of those entries in the HijackThis log just yet. Obviously the old method of removal is not working as efficiently as it used to so we will try another method soon.

If you don't mind I would like to leave things like resource hogs until you are clean.

Back later

Hi Daryl’

That fix didn't seem to work so we will try this way, double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Right-click inside the listbox (white box) and from the drop-down select the option labelled "Add more files?".
  • Copy/paste the entries inside the CODE box below into the box:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nhfenold.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcrvmwmx.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\srvad.dll
  • Click the button labelled "Add File(s)".
  • Click the button labelled "Close Window".
  • Click the button labelled "Scan for Vundo".
  • Once it's done scanning, click the button labelled "Remove Vundo".
  • Click the Yes button at the prompt asking you if you want to remove the files.
NOTE: Once you click Yes, your Desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer. Click OK.
NOTE: It is possible that VundoFix will encounter a file that it could not remove. VundoFix will then run on reboot, simply follow the instructions above starting from "Click the button labelled "Scan for Vundo"" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
