I am helping my nephew who just installed XP - has not yet downloaded updates. I believe he has been highjacked. Should I download updates first or remove offending programs first? Help is greatly appreciated.

Download the attached zip file and unzip it to your desktop.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DF52A427-A94E-256A-7FF7-A0060FEDB100} - C:\WINDOWS\apppg32.dll

O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149
O15 - Trusted IP range: (HKLM)

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\apppg32.dll

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.
