My PC was infected w/ VirusBurst or VirusBursters... fake "Critical System Errors" alert pops up from lower right side of taskbar; program took over IE home page & directed browser to "Internet Security" page. Apparently also caused infection with Trojan.Emcodec, perhaps others.
I've run Norton Antivirus, Trend Micro Anti-Spyware, Ad-Aware SE, SpyBot Search & Destroy, Trend Micro HouseCall, and Bit Defender. (I ran each twice, except Bit Defender only once.) I ran McAfee Stinger. Installed Zone Alarm firewall. Win XP SP2 has had autoupdate activated for some time, and is up-to-date.

IE now starts up at my default home page (i.e., it does not go to the phony site). All the various scans are now clean. I think the viruses and spyware are gone, EXCEPT that the icon in the right hand side of taskbar is still present. This icon switches between a yellow "X" and a yellow "?". Periodically, a warning alert pops up with title "Critical System Errors" and message "System detected virus activities. They may cause critical system failure..." If you click on this Alert message balloon it opens IE browser to web page for "Internet Security" which purports to sell antimalware software.

I don't know how to remove the task tray icon and its alerts, and I don't know if there is any spyware or malware still present (altho scans seem to indicate they're gone).

Following is my HijackThis log.

Thank you for your help!

Hello PTGuy,

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi PTGuy,

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi PTGuy,

We kill the bad stuff, but we still have some minor cleanup to do.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr__.exe

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd
(Description: CMedia audio card system tray applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi, SifuMike --

Looks like there's a slight (I hope only slight) problem. I fixed/deleted the 5 items you noted from the last HijackThis log. I then ran CCleaner, set the option re: deleting files in Temp folder, and selected all the entries you suggested, and then ran the cleaner to delete the files.

I then logged off first User ("Guy") and switched to User "Barbara". [note - i think this User had been logged in during actions listed above.] I tried to open Windows Explorer to navigate to CCleaner, but Win Explorer will not open. Error message: "An unknown error has ocurred. Error # 0x80004003". This 'hangs up' the mouse cursor as an hourglass and I can't select most things. I brought up Task Manager, selected User tab, then highligted & logged off User "Barbara". I then went back to user... same problem cannot open Win Explorer. Opened Task Manager then shut down windows and restarted Windows. Tried to open Explorer (only way I know to get to CCleaner) but again same "unknown" error. I observe when I shut down Windows from this User, that the Explorer folder opens and flashes on screen momentarily just before Windows shuts down.

I think everything seems to run fine from User "Guy" account. There are only these two User accounts.

Following is a new HijackThis log, created after doing all the above.

Thanks for your help... I hope we're almost through this!

PTGuy

zHi PTGuy,

Sounds like a damaged file.
We did not remove anything that would prevent IE from loading.

Let's try this.
Go to the go here and download Internet Explorer 7.

It is now out of beta and has many new features.

Let me know if it solves the problem.

SifuMike --

I probably wasn't clear enough... It's not Internet Explorer that wouldn't load from one user account, but WINDOWS Explorer (the file folders directory function of Windows). I needed to go to the drive folder where CCleaner was located in order to run it for the second user account.

I can install the new IE 7, but I'm not sure that is related to the Windows Explorer problem. In any event, Windows Explorer runs fine from my other User account on this PC -- so that doesn't seem like a damaged file issue...??

It just occured to me that I should be able to run CCleaner from the other User Account from the Start menu Run command. I'll try that.

Any other suggestions?
thanks again for your help.

Hi PTguy,

My mistake.

Let's run Microsoft's System File Checker program.
It check all the system files and bring them back to normal.

You will need your Windows Install CD to run this.

Scannow Tutorial
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Go to Start, then Run, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter.

Note: There is a space between sfc and the forward slash. Windows will ask you for your Windows Install CD so put it in...don't worry if the XP setup screen appears, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, your autorun utility in Windows is starting it. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

Hi, SifuMike -

I realized the "Unknown Error" report (in only one of my two User Accounts) was from Trend Micro Anti-Spyware. I un-checked "Venus Spy Trap Enable All Monitors", and everything could run fine! I have now un-installed Trend Micro Anti-Spyware (it was the 30-day trial version, installed during my attempts to solve my original problem, before you helped me!)

I did run "SFC" as u suggested. It ran the entire scan with a window showing progress bar... when the bar reached the end of its travel, the window simply closed -- no message saying all files OK or anything. The program also never asked for my orig Windows CD. Is this normal?

Following is a new HijackThis log. I think all my problems and issues are fixed... Do you see anything in the log?

Thanks again for all your help!!

Hi PTGuy,

I did run "SFC" as u suggested. It ran the entire scan with a window showing progress bar... when the bar reached the end of its travel, the window simply closed -- no message saying all files OK or anything. The program also never asked for my orig Windows CD. Is this normal?

Yes, it is normal. Most times it will ask you to put in the Windows install CD, but not always. The SFC program looks in your cache for the files it needs, then if they are not in the cache it asks you to insert the CD (to get the needed files). So you must have had all the files it needed in the cache.

Do you see anything in the log?

I see two items for cleanup.

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.

If you did not add this page to your trusted page, it should be fixed.

Run CCleaner to clean the temp files.

Let me know how the computer is running. :flowers:
