I understand there are only limited people available to help diagnose the logs, but going with the fact that many logs posted after mine has have been answered, I figured it wouldn't hurt to repost. Please excuse my impatience. Here is the post.

Hi, recently I have been having rather severe problems with the performance of my computer. I cannot use AIM - I get a kernel32.dll error, including issues with internet browsing such as certain keywords like 'personal', 'computer', 'home' etc being linked to another website. Any URL I type without the preface 'www.' is redirected to a search page. In addition, spyware and adware have made a comfortable home in my computer, it seems. I have run ad-aware and spybot s&d to minimal avail. Help me please. Here is my HijackThis! log. Thanks.

Hi

First of all remove the Peper Trojan.
1. Download and save PeperFix.
REBOOT in SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method,
and run the program.
It will remove the files, leaving one orphaned entry to be cleaned up with Hijack this.

2. REBOOT again into SafeMode and run it again for good measure.

3. REBOOT normally.

Download the stand-alone version of CWShredder from here
After you download the program, unzip it into a directory.

REBOOT into SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method

Make sure all browser windows are closed and run cwshredder.exe to start the program and click on the FIX button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

REBOOT normally and post a new hijackthis log please.

but going with the fact that many logs posted after mine has have been answered, I figured it wouldn't hurt to repost

This CWS_NS3 variant seems to be new. I'm not sure if the latest CWShredder will remove it ?!?
I hope you understand why nobody replied .

Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Thanks for replying!

I did as you told me, and you're right - the CWS did something I wasn't expecting. It said it found a number of files (easily more than 10... I think somewhere around 15) but the results were 'not present'. Then it performed and illegal operation and shut itself down. I reran the cwshredder and it did the scan telling me that no files were found. Here is the updated HijackThis! log.

You have Messenger Plus installed. This program is known to install malware. I would advise that you remove this program from your computer.

You are running HijackThis from your Desktop. You will need to move hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, such as c:\hjt . This has to be done as HijackThis creates backups when you fix items. You do not want them accidentally deleted or spread all over your Desktop.

First create a new folder:
A. Click My Computer icon on your desktop
B. Click C: drive
C. Click the File menu --> New --> Folder, a folder "New folder" will be created.
D. Rename it HJT

Move\Unzip hijackthis.exe to the c:\HJT folder.

You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. Please continue with the next step if you run into a problem with the current one. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you reply.

This is very important ! Internet Explorer should remain closed during the cleanup. If you open Internet Explorer the fix will fail. (Steps 1 - 8)

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

Please download About:Buster from here: About:Buster Download. Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process. Don't use it yet.

Download Ad-aware SE: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.

Download the cws-hsa.reg file to your desktop. We will use it later.

Step 1:

Go to Start -> Run and type Services.msc, then press the OK button. Look for a service called Network Security Service (NSS). Double click on that service and press the Stop button, and then set the Startup type to Disabled. Press OK, and close all the windows.

Step 2:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

Wprx.exe
msur32.exe
filstmib.exe

This is very important ! Internet Explorer should remain closed during the cleanup. If you open Internet Explorer the fix will fail. (Steps 1 - 8)

Step 3:
Run HijackThis!, press "Scan" and tick the boxes next to all these, close all other windows and browsers, then press "Fix Checked" button.

Step 4:
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\mrkyq.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\atlgp.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wprx.exe <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\msur32.exe <-- this file
filstmib.exe <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe <-- this file
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\unba.exe <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\winpb32.exe <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysocm.exe <-- this file

If you get an error when deleting a file, right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is, uncheck it and try again.

Step 5:

Double-click on the cws-hsa.reg file you saved earlier on your desktop, and when it prompts to merge say Yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step 6:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

When it completed move on to step 7.

Step 7:

Run AdAware, press the Start button, uncheck Scan for negligible risk entries, select Perform full system scan and press Next. Let AdAware remove anything it finds.

Step 8:

Clean out temporary and Temporary Internet Files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Step 9:
Reboot your computer back to normal mode so that we can restore files that were deleted by this infection:
  • This infection deletes the windows file, shell.dll.
If you are using XP,2000, or NT please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations (%windir% being the windows or winnt directory):

    %windir%\system32
    %windir%\system
  • If you are using Windows 98*Grinler please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll98.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations (%windir% being the windows or winnt directory):

    %windir%\system
  • Download the Hoster from here. Press Restore Original Hosts and press OK. Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: SDHelper.zip and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start -> Run -> type regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll and press the OK button
Step 10:

Please check Internet Explorer settings:
Open Internet Explorer - > Tools -> Internet Options ... -> click the Security tab -> click Internet icon -> press the Custom Level ,,, button.
Under ActiveX controls and plug-ins tick:
- Download signed ActiveX controls - Prompt
- Download unsigned ActiveX controls Disable

Run an online antivirus scan at:
http://housecall.antivirus.com/
Please make sure that AutoClean is checked.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Ok, Sorry it took me so long, but I did follow the steps you gave me. However I did enounter some problems. Here is a step-by-step of what happened.

I removed Messenger Plus.

Step 1: No problems

Step 2: Wprx.exe - N/A
msur32.exe - N/A
filstmib.exe - ended

Step 3: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://bigbr.cc (obfuscated) - fixed

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank - fixed
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\mrkyq.dll/sp.html#12345 - N/A

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://bigbr.cc (obfuscated) - fixed
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing - fixed

O23 - Service: SysOCM - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysocm.exe (file missing) - fixed
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\winpb32.exe - fixed

It seems as though all of the files under mrkyq.dll were renamed to iinok.dll. I didn't want to delete them as I didn't know if they were still corrupt. When I ran HJT at the end it seemed like the iinok.dll was renamed yet again to lvegy.dll, as you will see in the log.

Step 4: C:\WINDOWS\mrkyq.dll - deleted
C:\WINDOWS\atlgp.dll - not found
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wprx.exe - not found
C:\WINDOWS\msur32.exe - deleted
filstmib.exe - deleted under system32 dir
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe - not found
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\unba.exe - not found
C:\WINDOWS\winpb32.exe - deleted
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysocm.exe - not found I found a sysocmgr.exe but didn't delete it.

Step 5: No problems

Step 6: No problems

Step 7: No problems

Step 8: The program got stuck on scanning for compressed files and estimating how much room it was going to gain by deleting files. So I deleted the contents of the recycling bin and c:\windows\temp manually. I could not find the Temporary Internet Files folder for some reason.

Step 9: Upon startup I had an error saying that previously deleted winpb32.exe could not be found. Just thought I'd mention that. The rest went without problems.

Step 10: Illegal operation for IE after clicking yes the the virus scan approval prompt.

Overall the condition doesn't seem much improved. The default page is the same searchpage as it was before I started the whole process and I still get the ads popping up, etc.

Thanks a bunch for your responses and help. Here is the new log:

Make sure all browser windows are closed and run cwshredder.exe to start the program and click on the FIX button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

REBOOT your computer and post a new hijackthis log please.

If you want to remove this nasty hijacker you must follow exactly my instructions. The manual fix will fail if you open Internet Explorer or restart you computer during the fix.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Ran cwshredder.exe. Still the same thing. The first time, I did hit FIX, but I ran it again anyways. Still "not present" popping up, and it performed an illegal operation. I ran it again and it supposedly went smoothly. Here's the log.
