Hello,

God bless all of you for doing this. I appreciated your help so much back in September. Now, I'm back - working on my brother's laptop this time. (Unpatched windows surfing got 'em) He has taken this box in to an expert who ran several different tools on and seems to have taken care of most of the problems. However, there still seems to be some problems with the machine which may or may not be related to the malware infection. After the attack this computer can no longer stay logged in to a long-time dial-up connnection. Also, it is having trouble sending emial via outlook. Receiving is shaky as well. (pls refrain from Outlook commentary- it's their call ;) )There may be some problems with the networking components in general- they also cannot configure a new satellite connection. Not sure if the malwares did this or if the guy cleaning the machine accidentally removed something important. Anyway, pls take a look at these logs and let me know if you see anything. You guys are the best!

Trey

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\search.html

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Your log shows that you are seriously behind on windows updates. It is essential that you update your windows before we continue to help you as the infections could reoccur. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When its done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed. Then post a new log.
