I'm in a bind ... and desperately need help. I'm pretty much a computer ignoramus.

here are the facts:

1. When I powered on my laptop last night, I got a dialog box that said "cannot find file vmmdiag32.exe"

From my limited knowledge, the vmmdiag32.exe is a dangerous trojan or worm that eats away at the logon and startup process.

2. Earlier tonight, the infected laptop would not let me log on to Windows. I tried my User Name and Password, but got a box that said the system could not log me on and to make sure my User Name is correct.

What can I do to get back into my infected laptop ? I'm typing this note from my wife's computer.

is the vmmdiag32.exe the kind of trojan that would completely prevent me from logging on to my computer ?

I had read something about "safe mode". But I've never used "safe mode" before. Is that something I should try in order to get back into my computer ?

What else should I try ?

I'm a college student, with some important files on the hard drive of my infected laptop ... so I gotta get back in. I've been sweating these past couple days.

If this is not the correct forum, then can you direct me to the correct one ?

Can you guys help me ?

Thanks
