I have a problem with SyncroAd and Virus-Burst coming back after they are
"removed." I use Spy Sweeper to identify, quarantine, and delete them. After
a computer restart, they are back, i.e., Spy Sweeper will identify them
again. HJT has a similar result. (Have TrendMicro A-V and firewall.)

WHAT I HAVE DONE SO FAR (System Restore turned OFF throughout):
1. SYNCROAD: I ran the "Remove SyncroAd" sequence prescribed at
bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3257&hl=SyncroAd.exe:
- Spy Sweeper showed SyncroAd (and Virus-Burst) in the system:
C:\program files\Windows SyncroAd\SyncroAd.exe
C:\program files\Virus-Burst\Virus-Burst.exe /h
I did not attempt to remove them with Spy Sweeper.
- I could not find SyncroAd in Add/Remove Programs or in the Program Files
listing. Windows Search of files and folders did not locate them.
- I ran HJT scan (per the instructions in the tutorial "How to Use Hijack
This") and found both SyncroAd and Virus-Burst in the 04 section. (There was
no windupdates entry in the 016 section):
I put a checkmark next to the 04 entries and clicked Fix.
-Rebooted into Safe Mode. Could not find "C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd"
or any other listing for it in Windows nor could I find Virus-Burst (with
"Show Hidden Files and Folders" selected and "Hide Protected Operating
System Files" unchecked.)
-Rebooted in Normal Mode.
-Spy Sweeper shows both SyncroAd and Virus-Burst
-HJT Scan shows SyncroAd and Virus-Burst in 04 section, as above. Ran HJT
Fix.
-Spy Sweeper does not identify SyncroAd or Virus-Burst. (HJT appeared to
remove them.)
-Looked in the Startup section of msconfig. Following were listed but did
NOT have checkmarks:
c:\programfiles\Virus-Burst\Virus-Burst.exe /h
c:\programfiles\Windows SyncroAd\SyncroAd.exe
- Immediately after the above steps, I ran the following.
2.VIRUS-BURST: I ran the sequence in "Remove Virus-Burst" prescribed in
bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic63896.html, the Automated Removal Method:
- Downloaded and ran RogueScanFix as instructed. Rebooted computer.
- Downloaded smitRem, rebooted in Safe Mode, and ran smitRem as instructed.
Disk Cleanup ran. Rebooted into Normal Mode.
- Downloaded and ran Panda Active Scan Pro as instructed. Panda reported
three Hacking Tools disinfected but did not identify them further.

WHAT REALLY DEFINES THE PROBLEM:
(Note: I did reboot before running Panda ActiveScan but did NOT reboot after
the Panda scan.) System Restore was never turned on.
- Ran Spy Sweeper and it identified SyncroAd and Virus-Burst. (Apparently,
Panda did not help.) They were as listed as in section 1. SyncroAd, above.
Quarantined and deleted them.
- Ran HJT scan. There were NO listings of SyncroAd or Virus-Burst in
section 04 (or anywhere else.)
- Looked in msconfig Startup. SyncroAd and Virus-Burst were listed but did
NOT have checkmarks.
- Looked throughout folders and files in C:\ and in program files, Windows,
and System 32 but couldn't find anything related to SyncroAd or Virus-Burst.
(In Folder Options, "Show hidden files and folders" was selected and "Hide
protected operating system files" was unchecked, per instructions.)
- Ran AdAware and it reported a clean system
- Rebooted computer.
- Ran HJT scan and SyncroAd and Virus-Burst were again in section 04.
- In msconfig Startup, the SyncroAd and Virus-Burst listing NOW HAD
checkmarks.

SUMMARY: Spy Sweeper and HJT each seems to remove SyncroAd and Virus-Burst
from the Registry but, after that removal, they are both still listed,
unchecked, in Startup. After rebooting, it appears that a Startup
configuration change has been made (activated by the reboot) as evidenced by
the checkmarks next to them in Startup. As shown by Spy Sweeper or HJT, they
are back in the Registry.

- HJT Log, showing SyncroAd and Virus-Burst is as follows:

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
Some of this may seem repetitive to you, but let's work through it from the beginning and we'll get you fixed up.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

=======================

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not run a scan yet!

========================

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

It doesn't appear that virus burst is present any longer.
You may want to print out these directions for your reference as much of this step will need to be done in safe mode.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

  • Clean out your Temporary Internet files.
    • Internet Explorer
      • Close Internet Explorer and close any instances of Windows Explorer.
      • Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Internet Options.
      • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
      • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
      • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
      • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
      • Click OK.
    • Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed)
      • Open Firefox and go to Tools -> Options.
      • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
      • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
      • Click OK to close the Options window.
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
IMPORTANT: Close all windows and do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
    • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
    • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
    • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
    • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
    • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.
Please post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware scan report along with a new Hijackthis log.

I had restarted my computer and Spy Sweeper identified SyncroAd and Virus-Burst again. (Apparently, the smitfraudFix log had indicated they were gone.) I ran smitfraudFix again. The log is here:

I then followed the latest instructions. I cleaned out the Temp Internet Files. I launched AVG Anti-Spyware and performed the Complete System Scan. It found infections and I had it Apply All Actions. However, when I clicked Reports, I saw “No Report Available.” I did record the infections in Quarantine:

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

===========

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Buckeye Sam, I ran Spy Sweeper, AVG Anti-Spy and Trend Micro Internet Security and all came up OK. Looks like you did it! Thank you very much for your effort, responsiveness, and expertise. You and the other gurus on this forum do a great work for some many.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!
