Recently infected. I have spent a couple days following all the different removal methods (including AVG, smitRem, roguescan, spybot, etc) listed on this site. While it seems to be gone, I know there are a couple of things that are lingering - the VideoCompressionCodec file with all those executables (isamonitor, isauninst, pmsngr, pmuninst) that have been causing me such grief and internet explorer has an additional toolbar that won't go away, called a Protection Bar.

I have done the HijackThis and here is my log:

Hello coldcanuck,

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Thanks SifuMike,
It looks like it worked. That annoying tool bar is gone, along with the VideoCompressionCodec folder. My only concern is I did a search on my own for the pmsngr executable and it did find this on my computer:
PMSNGR.EXE-1D1544D8.pf
It found it in the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch folder. Is this anything to be concerned about?

So, here is the rapport text from the SmitfraudFix:

Please tell me I've finally rid myself of this! Also, we have Norton anti-virus and firewall, but I am concerned these tools are not good enough. Could you please give me your suggestion as to a better tool or tools to help protect us from something like this?

Thank you!

Hello coldcanuck,

It found it in the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch folder. Is this anything to be concerned about?

No, as we will be clean the prefetch folder and temp files with CCleaner.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java. Your old version is Java 1.5.0_02.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

In Normal Mode select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZNxmk36165CA

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

but I am concerned these tools are not good enough. Could you please give me your suggestion as to a better tool or tools to help protect us from something like this?

After I see your next log I will give you my anti-malware recommendations. :flowers:

Hey SifuMike,

Done everything you've suggested. After running CCleaner my computer is running about the same as it did before I ran CCleaner, and the PMSNGR.EXE-1D1544D8.pf file is still in the Prefetch folder, but the mal-ware does not seem to be bugging me anymore. Here is the HijackThis log:

Hello coldcanuck,

Your log looks clean!

I ran CCleaner, and the PMSNGR.EXE-1D1544D8.pf file is still in the Prefetch folder

Go to CCleaner, Windows Tab > System and make sure you have checked Old Prefetch Data. Then run CCleaner. After you run it, then you can uncheck Old Prefetch Data

Lets clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow Groovicus' Guide to Simple PC Security to help keep yourself from becoming infected again, as well as
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!
