First off, I have SpyBot, Ad-Aware, and McAfee security center (the works). Every once in a while McAfee pops up saying it detected and cleaned VBS/psyme trojan. I have cleared my temp internet files and cookies. I run the virus scan and it finds nothing. This keeps happening. Ad-Aware freezes every time I run it. When I try to manually delete the contents of Content.IE5 temp internet folders it gets to one and give me an explorer.exe error and closed. I tried to run disk cleanup and got a cleanmgr.exe error and it closed. I downloaded Stinger and it did the same thing...stng260.exe caused an error when it got to the Content.IE5 folders. My older version of McAfee was freezing up at the temp folders too but when I downloaded the new version it runs fine it just doesn't detect any viruses. SpyBot runs fine too but it doesn't detect vbs/psyme.

On startup I get an error saying this file is missing: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00034.exe

Also on startup I get an error saying that it can't load this file since it has been deleted (a free trial spyware i uninstalled) C:\Program Files\FBM Software\ZeroSpyware\

Please help!!!

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hi Sam thanks for your help! I ran the fixware and on startup I got the same errors (the ibm00034 and the zerospyware ones) plus a new one: wkscal.exe has caused errors and will shut down.

here's the fixware log:

You've got a few separate infections that show up, so this will take a few more steps.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Thanks again!

Ok I did the fix selected in Hijack This and I got an error message on O20 - AppInit_DLLs:
It said it couldn't fix it or delete it or something, I had it copied and forgot to save it before I rebooted

My settings were set to DNS automatic already.

I ran ipconfig /flushdns and the screen popped up and shut so fast i didn't see anything at all.

I rebooted in Safe mode and ran AVG anti-spyware here is the log:

::Report end

While AVG was running, I got a popup error from my Mcafee privacy service (forgot to disable all that) saying a file was missing or corrupt.

When I restarted in Normal mode, i didn't get the ibm00034 error message, but the ZeroSpyware one still popped up as a RUNDLL, and also the wkscal.exe caused errors and was shut down.

here is my HJT log:

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Delete this file, if present.

C:\WINNT\system32\uyxzvak.dll

============

Reboot your computer.

============

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log.

OK I ran the fix selected on the lines listed and the 04-startup:.protected and 04-global startup:.protected files said file may be in use, use task manager to shutdown program and run hijack this again to delete. had no idea what to do so i left it alone.

did not find a C:WINNT\system32\uyxzvak.dll but i did find C:WINNT\system32\zerospyware folder and deleted it. also hidden in C: drive was .protected....i decided it best to leave it alone for your instruction on removal..

rebooted and the only error message i got this time was the wkscal.exe error message the other 2 are gone  so I guess we're making progress!!

downloaded and ran smitfraudfix here is the log:

Open up AVG Antispyware and check for updates. Then close it. Don't run a scan yet.

==============

Fix this line with Hijackthis.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\wkcalrem.exe

===============

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be available to you at certain points of the removal process (while in Safe Mode). Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

1. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
2. Run Smitfraud
  • Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
  • The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
3. Clean out your Temporary Internet files
  • Internet Explorer
    • Close Internet Explorer and close any instances of Windows Explorer.
    • Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Internet Options.
    • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
    • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
    • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
    • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
    • Click OK.
  • Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed)
    • Open Firefox and go to Tools -> Options.
    • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
    • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
    • Click OK to close the Options window.
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
4. Next Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Display.
  • Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button.
  • Click on the Web tab.
  • Under Web Pages you may see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button.
  • Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
5. Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

6. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess.

  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
7. Reboot back into Normal Windows Mode

8. Run SmitfraudFix.
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
  • Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
9. Please post the following logs:
  • C:\rapport.txt
  • AVG Anti-Spyware log
  • A new HijackThis log
You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Deleted the hijack this item with no problem, on further startups i get NO errors popping up

When I ran Smitfraud and did option #2 the disk cleanup program popped up and froze. Now, I was having problems with disk cleanup freezing giving me errors and shutting down before. This time it just froze so i closed it and then got an error message "cannot import cleanup.reg: error accessing registry" So it didn't really finish doing its job I guess.

but here is the smitfraud log anyway:

SmitFraudFix v2.118

Scan done at 18:24:32.54, Fri 11/03/2006

Deleting infected files

Deleting Temp Files

Registry Cleaning

Registry Cleaning done.

After SmitFraudFix
!!!Attention, following keys are not inevitably infected!!!

SrchSTS.exe by S!Ri
Search SharedTaskScheduler's .dll

End

Then when I got to number 4 on your list to go to display, desktop, customize desktop......none of that is in my Display options. Couldn't find anything that said customize desktop, web pages, or security info. so I skipped that step.

AVG found zilch:

We need to update your version of Java.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 from HERE
    • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Accept the license agreement.
    • Click Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language to download the file.
  • Once the program has finished downloading:
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
      • It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
    • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
    • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
      • Downloaded Applets
      • Downloaded Applications
      • Other Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.
Your log looks pretty good. How are things working on your end?

Thanks again for your help, Sam

I am still having problems with Disk Cleanup freezing when I try to run it. Is that a virus problem, or a separate issue I need to post in a different section? Every thing else seems to be fine, no pop ups and stuff and all my apps seem to be running fine (except disk cleanup).

Updated Java and deleted the cache

Have you tried it in safe mode?
Where is it freezing?

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Yes, I tried it in safe mode when I was running #2 on smitfraud like you asked me to a couple days ago I think. Then I tried in normal mode again today. It stops when its scanning to find anything I can clean up, it gets to about 6 or 7 blocks on the progress indicator bar and then it just stops. I even left it up while we went out and several hours later it hadn't budged.

here's where I posted the smitfraud error:

"When I ran Smitfraud and did option #2 the disk cleanup program popped up and froze. Now, I was having problems with disk cleanup freezing giving me errors and shutting down before. This time it just froze so i closed it and then got an error message "cannot import cleanup.reg: error accessing registry"
