I've been reading multiple websites about how to remove my infection and have been somewhat successful. I might just be missing the last step(s)?

Some facts:
1. Got AVG Anti-Spyware, updated, scanned with default action Quarantine, all boxes under how to scan checked, possibly unwanted software, all boxes checked, automatically generate report after every scan. Unchecked "Only if threats were found", scan every file highlighted.
2. Exited ACG, did not run yet.
3. Reboot into safe mode.
4. Ran smitfraudfix, clear using #2, allowed disk cleanup to finish, yes to registry cleaning. No infected wininet.dll.
5. Reboot back into safe mode.
6. Run AVG anti-spyware, clicked scanner, did complete system scan. Just found some medium risk cookies, and fixed them.

Here is my SmitfraudFix:

Could you tell me:
- How to fix?
- How you knew what to see in HijackThis log (I may have to fix again in the future)
- Point me to freeware rootkit/bad script/malware detector that runs in the background? Saw a posting with this information somewhere, can't recollect what tool was recommended.

Thank you very kindly,

Sorry, forgot to post symptoms of infection:

1. Internet Explorer cannot be reset to different homepage. Always goes to http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?p...&ar=msnhome
2. McaFee VirusScan cannot be enabled.
3. Sometimes McaFee Firewall and VirusScan are disabled at system startup. Note that I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and found Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusDisableNotify problem AND Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisableNotify problem. Clicked to fix these, but they keep coming back upon rebooting.
4. My system is currently set so that System Restore Checkpoint creation is disabled.
5. Went through HijackThis and did "fix checked" on a couple of entries (or perhaps it was all of them  ) that came up with, e.g., BHO: (no name) or stuffstuff.dll (file missing).

Very grateful for your help,

Mickeysuper :flowers:

Hello Mickeysuper and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

The srchsts.exe file is part of the smitfraudfix program so there is no need to worry about that.

The appinit registry key might or might not have anything in it. If it is blank, that is Ok. Only programs that need to use it will put entries in that key.

The rest of the issues might be related to SpySweeper. If it is configured to block changes to the registry then it will also block things that you might want (like changing your homepage or changing the registry entries for Security Center messages). Try disabling SpySweeper and then attempt changing your homepage. If you still cannot change it then uninstall SpySweeper and try again.

The inability to change the Security Center notification registry entries might be caused by SpySweeper or McAfee. The 2 entries listed are simply for stopping a popup notification by Windows if it cannot find an anti-virus or a firewall (I automatically turn these notifications off as soon as I install XP). It could be either SpySweeper blocking these registry changes to enable the notifications or McAfee disabling these notifications because it knows its own anti-virus and firewall are installed. Spybot will always show this as a problem if the notifications are turned off. If McAfee anti-virus and firewall are installed I would just leave those 2 entries alone and ignore the Spybot message.

Try disabling SpySweeper and doing whatever it is you want to do and then let me know what happens.

I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.
