hi all,

my internet explorer 5.5 has been hijacked by about:blank/search assisstant. it is always my homepage no matter how many times i change it and also will not allow me to access hotmail and some other webpages... they load for a second and r then redirected to about:blank. this also happened in netcaptor until i removed messenger plus... i have tried to uninstall search assisstant from control panel/ add remove programs but it simply says uninstall failed!! i have tried to update internet explorer from the microsoft web page but to my amazement that also got hijacked by about:blank... i have also look at other postings related to about:blank but was unable to download rem.zip as the link was no longer valid!! here is my hijack this log, i would appreciate any advice as i am finding this very annoying. thanx

Hi

You have Messenger Plus installed. This program is known to install malware. I would advise that you remove this program from your computer.

Download sphjfix: here
Unzip it to your Desktop. Don't use it yet.

Download CWShredder: here. Don't use it yet.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

REBOOT into SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method.

Run HijackThis!, press "Scan" and tick the boxes next to all these, close all other windows and browsers, then press "Fix Checked" button.

Search for these files and delete them if found:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KJEJI.DLL <-- this file
C:\Recycled\Q330995.exe <-- this file

Delete these folders:
C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\EXIT INSIDE\ <-- this folder
C:\WINDOWS\Application data\PLUSLI~1\ <-- this folder, foldername strats with PLUS

Run sphjfix.exe, press the start disinfection button and let it remove the trojan. Reboot, let sphjfix.exe to finish the job

Run CWShredder, press the FIX button (not the Scan only button), and let him remove anything he finds.

Clean out temporary and TIF files.
A. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
B. Choose the drive you want to scan from the drop-down menu, and wait while the program calculates how much disk space is available for cleanup.
C. To delete obsolete files, click the Disk Cleanup tab, select the check boxes next to the files that you want to remove, click OK, and then click Yes.
Make sure these 3 are checked:
Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Reboot normally.

Run HijackThis! again and post a new log.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

ok, ive followed the instructions but both cswshredder and sphjfix failed to find anything at all??? yes about blank has been removed from my homepage but it still hijacks hotmail (at times) and other sites... also two extra toolbars open in internet explorer (not netcaptor tho) one which i can disable the other i hav to close every time i open IE. i have run several spyware programs which havnt picked up much except tracking cookies and the ones that do pick things up wont remove them without the reg. version. for example spyware doctor picked up -tinybar, -flashget, -jraun, -xx toolbar, -zango search assisstant, -tracking cookies but wont remove them unless i register. but also looking at the file paths i cannot find them in the registry or anywhere else so??? im not sure if they are actually there or not. here is my lateset hijackthis log, thanks
cel

When choosing anti-spyware protection, you should rely on products with deserved reputations and proven track records:
SpyKiller is a rogue anti-spy software.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
You can use these free programs: Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy + SpywareBlaster.
Please uninstall SpyKiller from Add\Remove Programs.

Please print or copy these instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

Download Ad-aware SE 1.05: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.

Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program.

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [City Mags Send Style] C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\BashOnlineCityMags\ExitBin.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Downloads\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup

O18 - Filter hijack: lzdhtml - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Filter hijack: deflate - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Filter hijack: gzip - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Filter hijack: text/webviewhtml - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Delete these folders:
C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\BashOnlineCityMags\ <-- this folder
C:\Downloads\SpyKiller\ <-- this folder

Run AdAware, press the "Start" button, uncheck "Scan for negligible risk entries", select "Perform full system scan" and press "Next". Let AdAware remove anything it finds.

With all windows and browsers closed.
Clean out temporary and Temporary Internet Files.
A. Open System Security Suite.
B. In the Items to Clear tab thick:
- Internet Explorer (left pane): Cookies & Temporary files
- My Computer (right pane): Temporary files & Recycle Bin
Press the Clear Selected Items button.
Close the program.

REBOOT normally.

Run HijackThis! again and post a new log please.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

ok i did all of that. at first adaware picked up over 100 critical objects but it now only picks up one reoccuring tracking cookie. ??? about:blank and its toolbars seem to have disappeared completely, thank you very much, however spyware doctor is still picking up flashget!! i looked this up on the net and followed removal instructions however i couldn't find any of the files named on my computer or in the registry. i have also been unable to remove the last 4 018 entries from hijackthis, they always seem to come bak even afer fixing and rebooting?? thanks for the tip on spykiller too, thats now gone. here is my latest log, thanks for all your help!!! also what would be a good (free lol) firewall to install and or any other prevantative methods???

Run this registry script.
Copy the contents of the Quote box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as RepairFilter2.reg (make sure to save as type: "All Files")

Doubleclick RepairFilter2.reg, and answer 'yes' when prompted to add its contents to the Registry, then restart your computer.
