Yeah, so me being careless I downloaded something with a keylogger.
I'm running WinXP Home, SP2; I ran AVG a couple days ago to try to get rid of the keylogger, but I'm not sure it's completely gone, and I'm just wondering if someone could double check and and see if it's still there as well as anything else that shows up on the HijackThis log. :flowers:

I need help ASAP! I need to know if the keylogger is still on the computer because I need to pay something over the internet with my credit card, and I don't want someone stealing it if my computer is not clean...

Hello Glam,

Yeah, so me being careless I downloaded something with a keylogger.

How do you know you had a keylogger? Did AVG find it? Do you know the name of the keylogger?

Who uses this computer? Is it used only by you? Or is it used by your family?

Please confirm that you have run the following scans or run them now.
They all scan for keyloggers and will remove many of them.

Save any logs that you generate - we may need them later.
Do not post any logs unless I ask you.

***************************************************

Please download, update and run (one at a time of course!)
Spybot 1.4 and Adaware SE 1.06.r1

Fix whatever they suggest.

If you need help running these tools, here are some helpful tutorials.
Spybot Tutorial
Adaware SE Tutorial

Be sure to run Adaware SE with a Full Scan in the Safe Mode.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Ad-Aware SE Setup

***************************************************

Please download, update and run the a-squared Free 2.0

Select the "Deep Scan" button and press the Scan button.

If malware is found, click the button "Remove Selected Malware"
and save the log file by clicking on "Save Report".

Let it delete whatever it finds.

***************************************************

I know you may have anti-virus software, but sometimes its definitions are corrupted due to malware. Online scans are the best resort in this case.

Run this pc through the
Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner
or
Panda Scan Online virus scanner
or
BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan

Let it delete whatever it finds. Post the log so I can see what it finds.

***************************************************

Next, reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log to this thread.

Please make sure that Word Wrap is turned OFF in Notepad before you copy and paste the HijackThis log here. Take a look at the log you just posted. It's an eye killer :flowers:

^^;; Sorry about the word wrap.

This computer is mostly used by me, but it is also used by my mom and dad, and sometimes my sister. Windows Defender and some AOL thing caught the keylogger. I downloaded AVG, after I found out I had the keylogger on my computer.

My schedule is a bit busy right now, so I'll run the scans tonight/tomorrow, and I'll post them ASAP.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Glam,

Did the AOL 'thing' tell you what the keylogger was? And the location?

My schedule is a bit busy right now, so I'll run the scans tonight/tomorrow, and I'll post them ASAP.

That is OK. Just do the scans when you have the time.

The AOL thing did tell me what the keylogger was, but did not tell me the location, it just asked me if I wanted to "Block it"

Hi Glam,

It should tell you in the AOL Spyware Protection log.
Go to AOL Spyware Protection, select Options at the top> View logs and post the log.

Hi Glam,

You log looks clean of malware, but you can remove some items to improve startup time.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
(Description: Checks for updates to MS Works. Unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up some system resources. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
(Description: Nvidia system tray applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
(Description: The WinAmp Agent. This puts a WinAmp icon is your system tray. It is completely unnecessary, and some viruses may hide in this file. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
(Description: Loads the System Tray icon for the WinAmp media player. Can be used to mantain file associations so programs like QuickTime and RealPlayer don't take over as default player for various media types. Available via Start -> Programs. If you don't use WinAmp constantly, removing this entry will free up some system resources. )

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
(Description: Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it, and thus should remove this entry. )

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi Glam,

Your log looks clean!

Lets clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!
