I'm working on my niece's PC. She was having lots of problems with pop-ups & re-boots.

Her usual connection at her house is via DSL thru Yahoo.

She sent the PC to me and during my PD findings she is getting the screen flooded with Symante Email Proxy pop-ups. She uses webmail on Yahoo ... does NOT use any resident email program altho' she does have Outlook and Outlook Express on her PC.

This flooding starts the minute I activate the wireless connection. No browsers are open.

I have verified that there are NO accounts set up on these programs. The outgoing email scan has been turned off from Norton so I could work on the system online. It looks like spam mail going out as there are error message that it couldn't be delivered, etc ...

I have scaned with Norton ... Adaware ... Spybot ... Housecall ... Panda ... BitDefender. During some of these scans it found Virtumonde Trojans, but have NOT been sucessful in deleting them. The programs will show that they have been deleted (ie: registry entries, etc), but they come back.

Also, on several reboots, get an error that Winlogon.exe has experienced problems and must close. It has rebooted on me several times, most recently during a download of Office Updates.

All OS updates critical updates are installed.

I'm attaching the HijackThis log. I'm hoping that I can get some assistance on this. I do not necessary want to reload the system for her and feel that we can get this resolved with all the good talent out there .

Regards, Pat

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt even if Vundofix found no infected files.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Also post a new hijackthis log.

That seems to have take care of Vundo, but there are a couple other files that I am suspicuous of still.
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\bsrafeer.dll

  • Click on the submit button
  • Please post the results in your next reply.
Also submit this file for scanning.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lthtvcef.dll

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\bsrafeer.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lthtvcef.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\bdonibsf.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mjixgydr.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

  • After rebooting, open up Killbox again. Click File -> Logs -> Actions History Log
  • Post this log in your next reply.
Please post a new hijackthis log.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

No problem on the delay. I'm sure I'll be around.

We need to update your version of Java.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 from HERE
    • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Accept the license agreement.
    • Click Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language to download the file.
  • Once the program has finished downloading:
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
      • It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
    • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
    • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
      • Downloaded Applets
      • Downloaded Applications
      • Other Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Hi Sam -

There was only one Java within the add/remove programs ... V1.4.2_03

Here is the Combofix log. During processing there was a brieft message within the window about 'Destroy' not being valid or something... it flashed so quickly I didn't catch it. Don't see anything in the log that references it.

Regards, Pat

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

Hello Sam ... Here is the current HijackThis log.

I've re-enabled the Outging scanning from Norton and am NOT seeing any multiple 'Symantec Email Proxy" scanner messages... That appears to be corrected. OK ... coming from a hardware/software position from 'big blue' (retired) ... my curiosity has gotten to me. What (who) was the culprit of that problem? I'm also not getting any "Winlogon" error messages, which wasn't all the time, but that also seems to be resolved.

Question tho' ... during the Jotti's scan "lthtvcef.dll" was found to contain a Projan/Proxy .. and we got rid of that ... however, I noticed in the 'Combofix.log' that there were two additional files lthtvcef(2).dll and lthtvce(3).dll in the system32 subfolder. I have verified these files still exist ... should I be concerned and get rid of them ????

And maybe I'm jumping the gun here  ... I see that there are still 'missing files' in the HijackThis.log.

Yes, you are correct. Delete those.

And maybe I'm jumping the gun here blink.gif ... I see that there are still 'missing files' in the HijackThis.log.

That's kind of a bug with Hijackthis. Certain areas it may show "file missing" when the file is not actually missing. It's just not where Hijackthis thinks it should be. If that makes any sense.

Regardless, these 09 lines can all be considered optional. They just show that you'll have an extra icon at the top of IE. If you don't want them there, fix the 09 lines. It won't hurt anything.

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)

The 023 lines, on the other hand, should be left alone. Those are services and they may be required. If you can confirm that those Symantec services are no longer needed and the file is in indeed no longer there, then it would be safe to fix those lines and delete the service.

I can't put my finger on exactly what was causing the problems for you. You definitely had a Vundo infection, but then there was other malware that seemed to be quite new.

Your log is clean! :flowers:
Here are some recommendations for you to keep things running along smoothly.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks Sam ...

I've downloaded SpywareBlaster and installed it. Ad-Aware and Spybot were previously installed. I've made the recommended changes to Internet Options. Only one item recommended was not set and that was 'navigate sub-frames across different domains' ... was set to enable.

This is not my PC, but belongs to niece who lives 120 miles away. I will document everything that has been done, plus list the above software that has been installed. Her daughter who is sharing the PC and uses it for college courses will also be instructed as to what software has been installed and how to use them ... and to know not to install anything that states via a popup 'your PC is at risk ... download this/that' ... etc.

I appreciate this forum, and all the assistance you have given me in getting their PC back to a working system. The easy way would have been to reload everything ... Since they didn't save their downloaded Antivirus programs they purchased in a local folder I was reluctant to do a reload. Plus it's a good learning curve on the various programs you had me use ... and coming from hardware/software it WAS FUN !!! :flowers:
( I know ... sick ... ) The positive side was it wasn't MY PC that was having problems and I had several others to work with while debugging hers.

I'm sure a donation will be forth-coming in the near future as soon as I can get this PC back to them.

Again ...

Thank You ...

Regards, Pat
