Posted 21 October 2006 - 05:47 PM

My computer appears to be infected with a number of virii. I have to admit it's totally my fault - a couple days ago a friend gave me a cd full of shareware apps, including one or two that looked suspect. I went ahead and installed them anyhow, very stupid. Now I am getting occasional browser popups and other odd system behavior.

I've scanned with: AdAware, Spybot S&D, X-Cleaner, Trojan Remover, EWIDO online scan, and AVG. They've come up with a few trojans: Zlob, Delf, Downloader-AK, among several others. After I think I've removed all of them, they gradually repopulate and/or new ones appear. My HT log is below, as it appeared when I booted the computer up this afternoon (no virus scanning done on this boot yet). Any help would be *greatly* appreciated. Thanks! -Rob

Hi Dave. Thanks for the reply, I know you guys are busy. I've done a bunch of scans and fixes in the meantime and seem to have gotten rid of the most obvious problems (popups and stuff). Still not sure if there's other crap lurking on here though. Here's the most recent log:

Hi again Robert77,

This may not be good news, but yours is an interesting case. You have some files in your log that I would bet are malware, but I have not been able to make a positive identification on it. So, before we clean your computer, I would like you to submit the following files for analysis:C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmqacge.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dwzikvk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtfxdvm.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fztxzai.dll

Download this program to your desktop:

submit files packer

Right-click the file sfp.zip and extract it to your desktop. This will create a folder named sfp.

Highlight the files listed above in bold and right-click, then select copy.

Double click the sfp folder to open, then double click the program inside (sfp.exe) to run it.

Right click in the white box and select paste to paste the copied file names in the field.

Then press the Continue button.

It will create an archive with these files and a small log on your Desktop that starts with a name like requested-file[date].cab.

Right click this file and rename it to Robert77.cab.

To submit, first go to your browser's address bar and click on the address of this topic. Then press <Ctrl> - C to copy the address into the Windows Clipboard.

Next go to the following Bleeping Computer page:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php

This is the Malware Submission Form Page. Put your mouse pointer in the form window labeled Link to topic where this file was requested: and click. Then press <Ctrl> -V to paste the url of this topic in that space.

Next, go down a line and click Browse. This will open a File Upload window, which works just like the File Save window I am sure you are familiar with. Navigate to the Robert77.cab file on your desktop and open it. click to select it, then click Open. You will then see the filename in the space next to the Browse button.

In the message window below, please type or copy and paste PM malware ID to DaveM59. That will get the information to me as quickly as possible. If you are curious you can also request that the information be forwarded to yourself.

You should also submit the .cab file to a couple of online services: Jotti and Virustotal. These are websites where you upload the file, and they check it with a battery of antivirus scanners and then present you with a report. Here are the links:

Jotti

Virustotal

Both have a similar submission process, simpler than the Bleeping Computer one I just desribed. Near the top of the webpage there is a white text box with a Browse button, just click it and navigate to the Robert77.cab file, select it, click Open, then back on the web page, click Send or Submit.

Jotti will probably tell you the service is running near 100% and will retry in xx seconds. Just leave it, open another browser tab or do something else, come back and check once in a while. It keeps resubmitting until you finally get in. Eventually you'll get the report. Virustotal puts the file in a queue and will estimate how long it should take before your file is analyzed. Again you'll probably have to wait. You can run both submissions at the same time in different browser tabs.

To save the report, highlight the relevant block of text on the web page, then press <Ctrl> - C. Open Notepad and press <Ctrl> - V. Save the file to your desktop.

There's a lot of overlap between the two services, so if you get a positive result on one, you can cancel the other. To do this, just close the tab or the browser window that that service is running in.

If you get the online results before you get the BC analysis go ahead and post them here. However even if the scans come up negative it doesn't mean those files are clean. It's more likely that they are recent variants and the AV companies have not caught up with them yet.

As soon as I get an ID on these files, my coach and I will work out a fix for your system. If you have any trouble with submitting the files please post back here.

Good luck,

Dave

Dave,

I uploaded the .cab file to both BP and those two other scans (Jotti & Virustotal), reports are printed below. They did come up positive for malware, and I briefly did a bit of looking around for possible fixes. For the Vundo trojan I used Atribune's VundoFix, which did detect and supposedly clean a few Vundo files. However, after getting your PM I realize that I should have waited for your instructions... apologies for that! I'll do so in the future, just was anxious about getting the system clean.

So besides the two .cab scan reports I've also included the most current HJT log from this evening. Thanks a lot, and I look forward to your reply.

Hi again Rob,

Thanks for your report.

The first thing I need you to do is to move HijackThis into its own folder. That way, any backups it makes will be safe.

In C:\Program Files make a new folder named HijackThis, then cut and paste the program into it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessible, right click the HijackThis icon in its new folder and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut) .

It seems you are running two antivirus programs, AVG Free and AntiVir Personal. You also have some Norton/Symantec components running but it appears that Norton Antivirus is not active. Anyway, two programs do not make you safer. They will cause slowdowns and may interefere with each other. You should disable or uninstall one of them now. In your case, since AntiVir detected your infection, I would suggest keeping it and uninstalling AVG.

It also looks like you ran this new scan while Vundofix was still running. Please make sure it is finished before proceeding.

Next we need to unhide files and folders.1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
6. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close out My Computer.
9. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
Now, open HijackThis and run a scan. Place a check mark next to the following lines:R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00F27EB7-BD30-7E30-F2A6-04AED4088E23} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ydszfwk.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {12E16598-632E-D889-E85A-08CAAC0F828E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rgkmvcj.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {30DCAEBB-221B-387E-CB8D-04A76B70FCD5} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\trsvbxh.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5EB1F15A-7E0B-8660-6A4C-02C3A62942DA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpaisvc.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tmqacge.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmqacge.dll,utsypuf
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dwzikvk.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dwzikvk.dll,wuvphcb
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mtfxdvm.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtfxdvm.dll,mkwhidd
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [fztxzai.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fztxzai.dll,nnbigic

Make sure no other programs are running and no other windows are open on your desktop. Then click Fix checked. Close HijackThis.

Next, reboot into Safe Mode.

If you don't know how to do this, here are two ways:

F8 Method
  • Restart your computer.
  • When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a menu.
  • When you have the menu on the screen. Use the arrow keys to move to the line that says Safe Mode.
  • Then press <Enter> on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Bootsafe utility

If the F8 method does not work, you can download this program: Bootsafe.exe. Download the .exe file (not the zip file) directly to your desktop, it requires no installation. To use it, double click the program icon, then select the radio button Safe Mode - Minimal and click on the Reboot button.

Once in Safe Mode, Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. Open that folder and delete the following files, if found. Some may be missing, if so do not be concerned, just delete the ones you find.ydszfwk.dll
rgkmvcj.dll
trsvbxh.dll
rpaisvc.dll
tmqacge.dll
dwzikvk.dll
mtfxdvm.dll
fztxzai.dll

After deleting the files, reboot into normal mode. If you used the F8 method, Windows should automatically reboot into normal mode when you restart it. If you used Bootsafe, open the program and select the Normal Mode radio button, then click Reboot.

Once back in normal mode, update your AntiVir and run a full system scan. Let it fix anything it finds. Save the report, I will want to see it. Then go online and run an Ewido online scan. Let that fix any problems too, and save that report. Finally, run a fresh HijackThis scan. Post the log from that scan, along with the reports of the other two scans, to a reply here. Also please let me know how the computer is running now.

Good luck --

Dave
