I'm having some serious issues with my computer and I believe it may be due to some sort of virus contracted through a suspicious email. I have spoken with Microsoft's free virus phone service but their help was minimal and pointed to the possibility of spyware. (Under that guidance I have used Spybot and AdAware to eliminate such programs). However, here are the symptoms that remain and any help would be greatly appreciated:

I am unable to run msregedit, msconfig, or my Earthlink Total Access software. Attempts result in this error message: "Another program is currently using this file." I HAVE however discovered that I can open each of the applications IF windows scandisc is running at the same time, but only in this instance. Norton SystemWorks and AntiVirus will not respond to this same technique and gives no error message when attmpting to open them. The hourglass icon shows for a split secondwhen attempting to open Norton programs but quickly disappears and nothing happens, nor will Norton programs load on startup as directed in msconfig. The computer also freezes VERY often requiring a complete reboot. And perhaps finally, I now have literally thousands of emails in my inbox every hour as returned failures.

I have limited knowledge regarding viruses or spyware and I am at a loss for this maliscious problem. Searching for the error message on google only returned one virus possibility that I was able to find, the Win32.HLLO.Mip However I have yet to find anything regarding how to repair it if it is the case. It IS listed on Norton's site but it obviously did nothing to protect me from it if so.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

PS- I have a HP Pavilion Laptop N5440 running Windows ME, FAT 32.
Thank You

Please follow these steps:

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

or

http://tools.zerosrealm.com/hjt.zip

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program named hijackthis.exe. When the program opens click on the Config button, then click on the Misc Tools button, and click on the Check for update online button. When it completes checking/applying updates press the back button.

Now click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post here and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.

To see a tutorial on using HijackThis you can click on the link below:

Hi pjserina, :flowers:
Unfortunatly you have a virus AND spyware. More unfortunately the virus does a lot of damage and is probably why Norton and those other programs don't work right anymore. It's called W32.Erkez.B@mm by Symantec and PE_ZAFI.B by TrendMicro. Here's my suggestions:

Get rid of the virus first. Trend Micro's free online scan may be able to clean it up, they have the definitions:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If unsuccessful there, try BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

If they have cleaned up the virus files, the first thing you should do is reinstall Norton's AntiVirus and the rest of the System Works package. And any other program that has been affected. The Earthlink software you can either do without or reinstall--it's not necessary to get connected but I still use it myself.

We can repair regedit and msconfig later. Have you noticed any other programs having problems?

Also run CWShredder.
Direct Download of CWShredder
If that link doesn't work, try this page:
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads.php

After you download the program, unzip it into a directory (folder). Boot into Safe Mode to run it.

Please view this tutorial for details: How to remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder

Then please scan again with HijackThis and post another log. There will probably be more to clean up.

Thank you so much for the help it is greatly appreciated. I ran trendmirco before i installed adaware and the like and found nothing, this time through it has detected that PE ZAFI.B like crazy! as well as TROJ IMPURITY.A It says that is is non cleanable however. As per your instructions this is the other side of the IF. Should I delete the files or will that simply cause more harm than good? And if so simply continue on with the rest of the directions after deleting correct?

BTW, is there any reason why norton didn't pick this up in the first place? I try to update every few days.

pjserina,

This is a brand new worm that came on very quickly. As of yesterday AM, only Panda online scan was cleaning it. You just had the poor luck of being one of the first to catch it - before most of the AV comanies had updated their definitions.
Knowledge is the most powerful weapon.

If I have helped you please pass along the good deed to someone else. If you would like to donate then I thank you also.

Ok I haven't reinstalled Norton, Earthlink, or any of the other programs that really seemes to be screwed up (mainly my messenger programs), yet. I figured I'de wait til things were cleaned up first. CWShredder did not find anything on the computer so I guess I lucked out there. Things seem to be clearing up as panda found and cleaned 44 infections. However the computer is now running extremely slow and I'm still having issues with random freezing  Here is the log from the hijackthis scan as requested:

I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button

You can also fix this item--Weatherbug doesn't appear to be installed any longer:

pjserina, I recommend you reinstall your anitvirus at least once you've done the fix suggested by Grinler. You don't need to be on the net without it. You should also look into installing a firewall. We can discuss this more once you've posted a new log.

Ok lets see, here, I did everything posted in the last 2 posts, except delete this:

CC:\WINDOWS\Application Data\ster.exe simply because I didn't find it anywhere. I have my folders set up to always show hidden files and folders and I double-checked. Otherwise all other instructions were followed. I reinstalled Norton SystemWorks and Firewall but still having some problems with Earthlink as its telling me it cannot access for installation, will try again later. Here is the next log as requested.

I'm also getting fewer returned and failed emails than I did before but I am still getting about 100 a day now instead of thousands. Most of them Norton tells me are infected and deletes. I reckon I'll need to get those to stop too

LOL. I will pass that info onto my wife

The failed bounced could be from other people who are infected with viruses and are sending out emails as if its from you .. Many viruses do that. They scan the infected poerson address book and pick a person who they will impersonate and start sending out emails. Unfortunately you get all the bounces because it looks like you sent it out.
