Hi,

I'm having several issues with my AVG Virus/Firewall combo.

First, after every Reboot I get the message that My firewall has stopped and that I am not protected. There is a long pause, maybe 5-10 sconds and after that the firewall shows as being active and acts (mostly) normal.
This knd of worries me even though I test nightly with AVG and weekly with Bit Defender, Panda, and Housecall online scanners. Also use spybot SD regularly. I have never found anything other than the usual tracking cookies, etc.

Occasionally the firewall will pop up at totally random times with a message that SYSTEM is trying to establish a connection with an outside site, which I don't allow, having not done anything to initiate this. I wrote down the external address that it is trying to connect with but have misplaced it .

Also, for the last few days a message has been popping up that the firewall profile has changed and go's to the default, block all traffic, at which point the modem disconnects and I need to reboot to re-establish a connection. This has happened maybe 4-5 times in the pst 24 hrs.

Here is my log.

Hi r.herkelmann,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

1.

Occasionally the firewall will pop up at totally random times with a message that SYSTEM is trying to establish a connection with an outside site, which I don't allow, having not done anything to initiate this.

Isn't this what your firewall is supposed to do, take action when 'something' tries to enter your computer? Next time it happens try to write down the messaqge you get and post it here please.

First, after every Reboot I get the message that My firewall has stopped and that I am not protected. There is a long pause, maybe 5-10 sconds and after that the firewall shows as being active and acts (mostly) normal.

It may be that this is caused by you having two AV programs running. While it is acceptable to have two anti-virus programs installed, it is not a good idea to have them both running in auto-protect mode as it may make both less effective. Choose just one to run in auto-protect and use the other for ad-hoc scans only.

2. I see you are running Teatimer. Of course this is very good but now you have to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system. When your log is clean, you can enable it again: I will let you know.

> Run Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and select Advanced Mode;
> On the left hand side choose Tools > Resident;
> Uncheck Resident Teatimer and click Ok (close Spybot).

3. You are running HijackThis from C:\Stuf. HJT creates backups and we want them safe and secure should they be required later. For that reason I recommend to remove HijackThis to its own location.
Create a folder on your C: drive: click Start > My Computer, open/double-click your C:\ drive, select New, next Folder and call it C:\hijackthis. Drag HijackThis into that folder!

4. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

5. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following file in bold if listed:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ALCMTR.EXE

6. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Yes, this isn't what I was refering to as strange. I looked in my AVG log and this is one of the events.

Date and time: 2006-10-25 20:22:54
Action: Block
Application: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
Protocol: UDP
Direction: In/Out
Local address: localhost:1399
Remote address: 69.42.72.99:0

As I said, this happens at very strange times.

It may be that this is caused by you having two AV programs running. While it is acceptable to have two anti-virus programs installed, it is not a good idea to have them both running in auto-protect mode as it may make both less effective. Choose just one to run in auto-protect and use the other for ad-hoc scans only.

I'm confused here, if I'm running anything other than AVG for Virus prot, I am unaware of it.

I've taken care of the other items you suggested, but you made no comment about the other issue which I am having, that being AVG's firewall going into "Block all" profile. There are some events that seemed to take place around the time that this has happened, here is one of them.

Date and time: 2006-10-26 15:09:40
Action: Block
Application: Filter Device
Protocol: UDP
Direction: Out
Local address: 192.168.1.47:68
Remote address: 255.255.255.255:67

When it happens I simply get a message that "profile has ben changed to default profile Block all" and I'm unable to re-establish a modem connection without a reboot.

Here is my current log.

Hmmm.

I turned off Tea timer as per your instructions but it started again at startup and I didn't realize it. I did allow the changes that it queried me about.

Hi r.herkelmann,

I'm confused here, if I'm running anything other than AVG for Virus prot, I am unaware of it.

According to your log you're running AVG and Norton AV. I suggest you remove one of them and check if you are still having the same issues.

Furthermore I checked the IP's from your post and cann't find information on them. What I understand of the information you provide is that 'something' tried to get access to your computer and your firewall, as it should, blocked all the open ports to prevent that. However I find it strange that you have to reboot.

1. Disable TeaTimer again.

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0011-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06) -

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

3. Let's dig a little deeper. Download Silent Runners.zip and extract it to a new folder on your Desktop.

* Run the Silent Runners.vbs file.
* You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO."
* If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run.
* This script is not malicious so please allow it.
* A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file, and copy & paste it in your next reply.

Please post the Silent Runners report along with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are.

Hi,

The only thing running by Norton is Ghost, a backup utility. I have never installed any type of Norton AV. AVG is the only AV I have used for years. Could the shared stuff from Symantec be interfering with AVG? I had assumed it was only keeping Ghost up to date.

Hi r.herkelmann,

1.

The only thing running by Norton is Ghost, a backup utility. I have never installed any type of Norton AV. AVG is the only AV I have used for years. Could the shared stuff from Symantec be interfering with AVG? I had assumed it was only keeping Ghost up to date.

Since the 'shared stuff from Symantec' (just as an example) is definetly referring to Norton AV the answer is 'yes' it may interfere.

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\ssv.dll (file missing)

Pleaqe post a new HijackThis log and let me know how this went.

Hi,

Here is my current log. Hard to tell how much difference these changes are making since the system runs ok, except when the firewall gos into total lockdown. My biggest concern is the is the notice about the firewall not being active upon startup. In my mind it seems like a great way for a virus/trojan to gain control at the start of a session. Not really sure what to do about the Ghost situation, it doesn't really give me an option to disable having it load at startup.

Hi r.herkelmann,

Your HijackThis log is as clean as can be.

Hard to tell how much difference these changes are making

I am confused by this remark: you mean changes because of the instructions I gave?

By the way to be clear I am not asking you to disable Norton Ghost!

Looking at all the logs I am convinced that your problems have nothing to do with malware.

Okay if I understand well you have AVG Anti-Virus plus Firewall installed; am I right?

Hi,

Yes, You had asked me to let you know how the previous changes went.

Yes, I am running AVG+ firewall.

Glad to hear that I'm not infected, that was my big concern. I guess I will get in contact with AVG about the other issues.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Roger.

I think that's a good idea. To look for information on your issue I started to search and I think this may be a good start for you.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

You're very welcome.

P.S. Of course I am curious to know what is causing your problems. I would appreciate to hear about the solution in this thread or in a PM.

Glad to hear that I'm not infected, that was my big concern.

As you have seen it was a minor infection but to prevent problems:

1. Remove previous restore points and set a new one to purge any malware that may have been backed up:

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

2. You may now enable Teatimer:

> Open Spybot, click on Tools in the bottom left hand corner, then Resident and check Resident "TeaTimer" box.
> Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with: SpybotSD Teatimer
> Click on Mode, select Default mode

Close Spybot!

3. In order to prevent future infections follow these recommendations:

a. Visit Windows Update on a regular basis to stay current with critical updates.

b. Install and run the following free programs:

* Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here!

* Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found
here! Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

* SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here!

* SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here!

* IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Keep all these programs (including your anti-virus) up-to-date and run them regularly.
If you do not update regularly they will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

c. I recommend you to read Tony Klein's excellent article: So how did I get infected in the first place?

d. If you want to fight back the Malware Writers, please take a look here!

Glad I was able to help and if there are any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BleepingComputer Forums, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Good luck! :flowers:
