Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. It should not run from a temp directory.
  • Download and run the HijackThis autoinstall program
  • Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files as the destination.
  • Run the program only from that location from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.
Once you have Hijackthis running from this folder, please reboot and post a new hijackthis log as a reply in this thread.

Can you tell what sort of issues you are having?
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

I truly appreciate your assistance. --- Note: This is the 2nd scan as per your requestThe computer is running relatively well BUT....lol the browsing fluxuates and is generally not all that great. I do not want to confuse this issue. Once you are on a site and you go to different places WITHIN that site, that is one issue and it has nothing to do with my computer---It is the sites speed and activity. BUT, if you change sites and go from site to site, then we have the true browsing issue. AM I correct in this assumption..?

This is the "re-scan" AFTER running it from Program Files as you had requested.. I also went to MSCONFIG and enabled everything. Hope that was proper to do to enhance the analysis.....Thank you sooooo very much for your assistance!!!!!- Really.....

Yes, that's perfect!

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin]
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HbTools] C:\Program Files\HbTools\Bin\4.7.7.0\HbtOEAddOn.exe

Delete this folder, if present.

C:\Program Files\HbTools

I see signs of several antivirus programs in your log. You should not run more than one antivirus at a time. Running more than one can cause problems. You should uninstall all but one of these programs.

Mcafee
Norton (Symantec)
Antivir
Bit Defender

Your Panda log doesn't show me anything to be concerned about.

Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log.
Let me know of any problems or issues that you are still having.

As for my "Security" Protection, I am doing the following...

For ACTIVE protections....
AOL SSC (Don't laugh TOO hard...lol)..Virus/Spyware/Firewall PLUS a Firewall in the Westell 327W router

For scanning and the INACTIVE/NOT running all the time: I am utilizing these in an attempt to familiarize myself/test them in an attempt to rid myself of AOL SSC. Boy, NOBODY says ANYTHING nice about them and I do not know any different....

Virus Scanners
  • Bit Defender-8
  • ClamWin
Spyware:
  • Ad-Aware
  • Spybot S&D
  • Windows Defender
  • Super Anti-Spyware
  • Ewido(AVG)
Kindly keep me advised. I really really appreciate your assistance!!!!!!!- Very much so!!

Well AOL Security uses Mcafee as it's antivirus. Which is fine. But then you should remove Bit Defender so that you are not running both of them.

It's likely that either Windows Defender or Superantispyware is interferring with the fix by Hijackthis. Make sure that both of those programs are disabled and then fix these lines with Hijackthis.

Re-Booted with "enable all" in the msconfig and then ran the scan.
I'll STILL be dipped. I clicked ALL 3 and "Weather on Tray" went away on the first "fix". The remaining 2 persist....Even after several attempts..just as before....What the heck ARE they? Not that I would know the difference.

Bit Defenders Active Shield is only "Active" with the Professional edition which I do NOT have.

I made certain the Super Anti-Spyware AND Window Defenders "Active Shield" was disabled. Is having the "Active" protection disabled for these 2 enough to address what you said about them???????? Super Anti-Spyware can be removed BUT Windows Defender came with the computer.

Is this/my situation as much as a pain in the butt to YOU as is normally expected or is this "normal"... I really really do NOT want to impose too greatly on you!!! I greatly appreciate your time and effort....

The log is as such:

It's not much to worry about. I'm sure they are just orphaned registry keys. But we should get rid of them since they reference malware.

Try this to disable Defender.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

As for Superantispyware, I'm not certain because I've never used the program. It should be in settings though.

Let me know if that does the trick.
If not, we'll try something else.

Hello Again!!!
Well, I'm certainly taking up more of your time and effort than this probably warrants. And I cannot emphasize more how much I appreciate your tireless and valuable help.
I checked for "Active" protections on all 7 of the Non-Resident Protections and DISABLED them. (None were necessary):

Virus:
  • Bit Defender-8
  • ClamWin
Spyware:
  • Windows Defender (As you suggested)
  • Ad-Aware
  • Spybot S&D
  • Super Anti-Spyware
  • Ewido(AVG)
I would think that "Add checked items to the ignore list" would be the LAST thing to do as one of the options in HJT....

I will update and RUN ALL of the above 7 plus the "Active" AOL protections in the "SAFE" mode. Then re-boot with ALL MSCONFIG options ENABLED and again run the HJT. I'll re-post with hopefully happier news.

I will be checking back occasionally while performing these tests to see if you perhaps you've come up with something in the meanwhile.

I have faith that we can/will get find a solution this this rather stubborn issue.....

Thanks a GIG....
P. S. Can you have several Spyware protections running at the same time or do you run into the same problem as the Multi-Virus issue. Or is it a "try it and see" approach...Probably would slow the system down at least....????

Yes, I've heard of that site and it is well respected source of information and tools.

Here's part of our problem. You can not run more than one antivirus program without causing problems. You are currently running three.

I know that AOL is actually Mcafee, so I would recommend that you remove Clamwin and Bit Defender. I would also recommend uninstalling Windows Defender and Superantispyware(unless you have paid for it already).

Once you have uninstalled those programs, please post a new hijackthis log.

I also want to get a look at another type of log that will show us some more info.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Again I must extend many thanks for your time and effort. I compliment your determination and resolve...

DO you still recommend uninstalling Bit Defender, ClamWin. Super Anti-Spyware and Windows Defender even though ALL 4 of their ACTIVE options are DISABLED? (Does NOT appear that you can uninstall WindowsDefender, it came with the computer and there is NO "uninstall" in the Add/Remove Program section).

Here is the log from ComboFix as you recommended:

DO you still recommend uninstalling Bit Defender, ClamWin. Super Anti-Spyware and Windows Defender even though ALL 4 of their ACTIVE options are DISABLED?

Yes I do.

In one of your previous posts, you posted this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HbTools] C:\Program Files\HbTools\Bin\4.7.7.0\HbtOEAddOn.exe WAS ELIMINATED from the HJT Log....Because......

ClamWin FOUND AND QUARENTINED THIS:
Scan started: Fri Oct 20 12:06:42 2006

ERROR: Can't open file C:/pagefile.sys
C:/WINDOWS/system32/ActiveScan/pskavs.dll: Sirius.Annihilator.272 FOUND
C:/WINDOWS/system32/ActiveScan/pskavs.dll: moved to 'C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/.clamwin/quarantine/pskavs.dll'

Clamwin didn't have anything to do with that line being removed. The file that it identified as malware is actually associated with Panda Activescan, which is an online virus scan. It's a false positive. Your antivirus programs can conflict with each other and deliver even more false positives.

You are much better off to only have one antivirus program installed on your computer. The only time I would even recommend an additional antivirus program was if you were having a problem and it was an on demand scanner only. Once any issues are resolved you should uninstall the additional antivirus program leaving you once again with just one.

Something that is a bit puzzling to me now is that I don't see any signs of one of the lines we were trying to so hard to remove with Hijackthis. It should show up in the Combofix log, but does not. So it appears that somewhere along the way it has been removed.

But we'll deal with the other one now.

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\MyWebSearch Email Plugin]
Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log.

I need also to see a different type of log from Hijackthis
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on "Open the Misc Tools section".
  • Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
  • Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file.
  • Place the content of that file here in your in your next reply.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!
