I did this in safe mode with netowrking. If I boot up normally, I get prompted for the password and can't get farther.

Sorry, forgot to add that I did all the the things to do before you post. I did ad-ware, spybot, housecall, etc. Ad-ware found 2 things, but I didn't get the names before it cleaned them. Most of hte others came up clean.

A couple of other things.

My Dad sent me one of those "funny" emails with some powerpoint attachment of a laughing cat. And I tried to connect to my corporate VPN for the first time, but it seemed to start and then lock up. I never connect through as far as I could tell.

Please help. Life without a PC is...difficult.

Hello spamautodeleter and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

I do not believe that any infection would be causing this issue. If you are receiving a message that the domain is not available then that would point to the machine attempting to log on to your company domain at bootup and not to the local machine.

In the logon dialog box, what is the full name of the domain that shows?

Cheers.

I have XP Pro at home. I named the domain AMD4200 and that is what is in the error message. It is not the same as my office domain.

I wanted to add that I pulled that log in Safe Mode. If I boot into the normal XP start, it takes an incredibly long time between the appearance of the "windows is starting up" screen and the "click your user name" screen. It never took this long in the past. Can some sort of virus be loading during that long pause?

Hi spamautodeleter. It is possible but I would highly doubt it. There is a set time that the system will wait while waiting for a response from the domain it is attempting to attach too. After that time period it will continue with that error message if no domain is available.

Let's see if we can find out what domain it is looking for.

Download WinPFind2.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind2 on your desktop.
  • Open the WinPFind2 folder and double-click on winpfind2.exe to start the program.
  • Keep the standard settings.
  • In the AddOn-Options group click the checkboxes for
    • HKCU_IEDesktop.def
    • Jobs.def
    • Policies.def
    • SID_Run_Policies.def
    to select them.
  • Now click the Run All Scans button on the toolbar.
  • When the scans are complete click the Simple Report button in the lower right-hand corner to create a report file. Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Use the Add Reply button to post the information back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Cheers.

I downloaded the program, selected the correct options and tried to scan. When I click run all scans, I get an error -- Grid index out of range.

If I deselect Other Options/Services, I can run the scan. That scan is below. I cannot get the services to run even if it is the only option selected.

Hi spamautodeleter. I do not see anything out of place in the WinPFind2 log. I do wonder about not being able to scan the service controller. It might be that the network drivers are not loading.

Let's try something else. Go to this MS article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...Ben-us%3B818088 and follow the steps outlined there. Let's see if that resolves the issue.

Cheers.

Hey OT,

Sorry for the delay responding. I did seek some local help for my problem since it wasn't malware. It was a combination of using some of the tools and quaratining some Cicso VPN files which led to the problem you hinted at. I did try your last suggestion, but when that failed I sought the local help. It did put me on the correct path.

Check's in the mail. One for you and one for bleepingcomputer.com.

Cheers!

Hi spamautodeleter. Well, that's a new one I haven't heard before. Glad to hear that things are working correctly now.

In that case I will now close this topic. If you have any new malware questions or issues in the future please start a new topic.

Thanks for the donation

Cheers and Happy Computing!
