I have a friend who's computer has the websearch toolbar on it and really who knows what else. She loses connectivity to the internet and internet explorer won't work at all. Firefox will, but only after she uninstalled it and installed it again. She has run spybot and ad-aware and removed everything that it can remove. Her cable company's virus software tells her that websearch toolbar is installed, but it can't remove it. It's not in the add/remove programs, either. There maybe other problems besides this. Hopefully someone can take a look at this log and help us out. Your help is greatly appreciated. I had her send me her hijcackthis log and this is it:

Hello cookdog23, and welcome to XXXX. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.

Please take note of the following:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please give me some time to look over your log and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Charles

Hello cookdog23, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

======

You need to put HijackThis into its own folder. It makes backups and they need to be kept all in one place.

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your hijackthis.exe there.

======

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

======

Post back with the log created,
Thanks,
Charles

Hey cookdog23, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. :thumbsup:

======

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

*From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter.
*The fix will start. Please don't use your keyboard while the fix is running! Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal).
*L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. When asked, Press any key to reboot.
*After the reboot Notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

======

Post back with the following:
-New Hijackthis log
-L2MFix log

Thanks,
Charles

Hey cookdog23, sorry for the delay.

======

You still need to put HijackThis into its own folder. It makes backups and they need to be kept all in one place.

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your hijackthis.exe there.

======

Please download Hoster from here
  • Unzip Hoster.zip
  • Open Hoster.exe
  • Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"
  • Close program when complete.
======

Post me back a new HijackThis log, please.
Thanks,
Charles

You still haven't moved HijackThis to a safe directory. This is crucial because it saves backups of the items that are fixed, and if we accidentally fix something we may need to restore it by using these. If it is saved in a temporary folder, it will not be able to create these, so we need to move it as soon as possible. Please follow the instructions in my last post of how to move it to a permanent folder, and post me back a new log, please.
Thanks,
Charles

Sorry about that. I'm not the one actually doing the work... I explained it to my friend and I think she did it correctly this time.

Hey cookdog23, sorry for the delay.

======

Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.

======

Please disable Spybot S&D TeaTimer, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean. To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:
  • Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
  • Check Yes to next window.
  • Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
  • Click on System Startup icon.
  • Uncheck Teatimer box.
  • Click Allow Change box.
If you still need help with how to disable Teatimer please see here.

======

C:\WINDOWS\system32\anclb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ANCLoadBalancer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\anclb.exe

Do you know what this is? If not, please follow these steps to submit it for a scan:

Please visit the online Jotti Virus Scanner
Click on Browse button.
Copy and paste the following filepath in the box:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\anclb.exe

Click on the Open button.
The scanner will check the file with various AV companies.
Then copy and paste the results box into a reply to this thread.

======

Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

    It should have this icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.
======

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ANCLoadBalancer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\anclb.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} (MetaStreamCtl Class) - https://components.viewpoint.com/MTSInstall...om_bedroom1.xml

Note: For the items highlighted in blue, if you did not place these restrictions yourself, e.g. by using SpyBot S&D, please have HijackThis fix them.

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

======

Open HijackThis
- Click the Config... button, then go to the Misc Tools section.
- Click on Open Uninstall Manager. You'll see a list of programs.
- Click on Save List...

The file "uninstall_list.txt" will be created. Copy and paste the contents of this file to your next reply.

======

Post me back the following:
-Uninstall List
-New HJT log

Thanks,
Charles

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all.

We won't call you asking for your password to clean your viruses (unlike some people - next time, please let some of us sleep ;) ).

Sponsored by donations (in random order) from: Stormbyte Technologies LLC, The ClamAV project, Steve S., Eric Johansen, Eric Schechter, Paul Bokel, Wilders Security, Wilfried Lilie, Prevx, SonicWALL, Lance Mueller, Ewido networks, HotelScraper.com, people who donated in the past, and some people who prefer to remain anonymous... many thanks to all!

Hey cookdog23, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Did you follow my HJT fixing instructions last time, it looks to me like you didn't as all of the entries I asked you to fix are still there? You also did not disable Spybot. Please make sure you follow what I tell you to do in the future; then your computer will be clean much quicker.

======

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed

Viewpoint components are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting "Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager" -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself.

======

======

Are you sure you disabled TeaTimer last time, it still seems to be running; this can cause some problems with the fix? Follow my previous instructions, please.

======

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ANCLoadBalancer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\anclb.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Note: For the items highlighted in blue, if you did not place these restrictions yourself, e.g. by using SpyBot S&D, please have HijackThis fix them.

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

======

Go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=7 and submit the following file(s):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\anclb.exe

======

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
======

Post me back a new HijackThis log, and the Panda log,
Thanks,
Charles
