It's rather odd.... I have a large collection of avi's/wmv's/mpg's etc... They are stored in different directories on different HD's... It seems my system works fine unless I access those folders and then Explorer will lock up and "Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger" unexpectectedly quit and locks up. I send the error report and force quit the window and then my desktop pops back up.

It happens with any of my folders/subfolders of multimedia only. In other words, I can have a directory with a few folders and a few vids. That dir will work fine. But when I go into a dir with ONLY vids, it locks.

I've already run AdAware, Panda AV and Spybot.... only the usual cookies come up.

Anyhow... here's the error log text. This log isn't from the Dr.Watson quit log, it's from when I have to force quit the window.

Folder's containing AVI movies are often slow to load with explorer.
The following regedit should correct this problem.

Go to Start » Run » type: regedit » OK.
  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to File » Export
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
      Under "Filename" put RegBackup.
  • Choose to save it to C:\
  • Click save and then go to File » Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Please open notepad and and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler]
@=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}]

Save this as "fix.reg" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Reboot the PC and let me know if the folders open OK now.

David... THANKS! So far they've been opening fine. I've not done EXTENSIVE testing, but so far so good.

I'd really love to know what that regfix actually does and why this odd bug just started happening for me.

When the Windows Explorer under Microsoft Windows XP opens a folder containing .AVI files it may attempt to index the file in order to extract information for a thumbnail. This can cause problems if an .AVI file is very large or there are many .AVI files in the folder.
What we did was to disable that process.

I'm glad I was able to help, let me know if it stays ok over the next few days.
