evaporating memory

i have an extra pc that i used in an office i closed earlier this year...i started to get error messages towards the end of its run in the office like :"low memory, perform a disk cleanup or remove programs", so i removed a few programs and did the disk cleanup but my memory actually continued to evaporate instead of recover. so jumping ahead several months later I fired it back up at the home office and now it says memory space is zero...148 gigs I cant find. so today i did a scan with the built in Windows Defender and immediately an adware file Win32/peapoon showed up. I found Hitmanpro on line on my laptop so i loaded the file onto a thumb drive and opened it from there in the PC. it did a scan and listed an additional 2 malicious files, along with a billion cookies that the disk cleanup never caught, then shut down halfway through...i guess it saw us coming,which didn't really surprise me. for years the malware game was just that, a game of cat and mouse...I used to jump out of my chair with a "touchdown" cheer when the bugs would die...those cheery days are over now. What to do?
