I've been having some problems recently and frankly I don't know where to begin.
My main problems are I only occasionally manage to access secure sites such as my yahoo mail account, and when I do, I am not able to answer any of my e-mails. And sites that uses pop-ups and/or redirects won't work at all.

I have absolutely no idea how this has happened, but here are two obvious problems that may or may not be related:

-I have had some trouble uninstalling my Norton Antivirus completely and investigations into this subject has shown that it seems virtually impossible.
-Secondly, a very persistent start page hijack, i.e. http://xysearch.biz?wmid=1010

Needless to say, would be greately thankful for any help offered.

Hi

Download KillBox here: KillBox 2.0.0.76. Unzip it to your desktop.

Start Killbox.exe

Select the Delete on reboot option.

Copy and paste each of the following file(s) to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"
C:\WINDOWS\System32\TGBRFV_.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\TGBRFV_5.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\TGBRFV_.dll

After each file press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).

A dialog box will ask if you want to delete and reboot now - on all but the last file, answer No
For the last file (or first, if only one file), answer Yes

Your computer will reboot.

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = C:\WINNT\_s.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = C:\WINNT\_s.html
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=Userinit.exe,

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm

O15 - Trusted IP range: (HKLM)

O19 - User stylesheet: (file missing)

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

REBOOT your machine.

Run HijackThis! again and post a new log.

I'm sorry dude. I'm sure you helped me get rid of something, and I really appreciate you took the time to help me out, but the problems I mentioned in my first post are still present. I can't answer mail or see wanted pop-ups.

Maybe I should take this back to the software part of the forum I posted in initially...

you helped me get rid of something

it was the a-search.biz hijacker and other unknown malware.

You have other suspect files:

C:\WINNT\System32\winxtc.exe (file missing)
winxtc.exe is added by the W32/Agobot-WD WORM

C:\WINNT\System32\ns.exe (file missing)
Suspect

C:\WINNT\System32\Wintab32.exe
No information about this file

I'm not sure if the files are missing.

Run at least 2 online scans:

Perform a full scan here: Panda Online, follow the instructions on the screed, make sure these are checked:
- Disinfect automatically
- Scan compressed files
- Scan e-mail files
- Neutralize Trojans
and let him remove anything he finds.

Perform a full scan here: Trendmicro, check AutoClean and let him remove anything he finds.

Perform a full scan here: BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Tick all the boxes on the left and let him remove anything it findes.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

O23 - Service: windbs - Unknown - C:\WINNT\System32\winxtc.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: NS - Unknown - C:\WINNT\System32\ns.exe (file missing)

I found no information about this file. If you don't know what it is, check this entry:
O23 - Service: Wintab32 - Unknown - C:\WINNT\System32\Wintab32.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Delete these files, if found:
C:\WINNT\System32\winxtc.exe <-- this file
C:\WINNT\System32\ns.exe <-- this file

C:\WINNT\System32\Wintab32.exe <-- delete, or better rename this file if you don't know what it is.

Empty the recycle bin.

REBOOT normally.

Post a new hijackthis log please.

-I have had some trouble uninstalling my Norton Antivirus completely and investigations into this subject has shown that it seems virtually impossible.

I cannot help you with this one, but Symantec Customer Support should.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Things just got radically worse, but don't worry, this has nothing to do with your advice. Due to unknown reasons I've totally lost touch with my D-drive. Since I had a lot of non-backed work there, the hijack problems has gotten a slightly lower priority.

I ran a number of anti-virus programs and deleted a lot of stuff they found and maybe this had something to do with my sudden loss of the D drive, I don't know. Maybe I should take this problem to the hardware forum, but now that I'm here I might as well say that my trouble with java scripts and redirects persists, although I managed to get rid of the Norton CRAP with Killbox.

Here's my latest HJT log:
