Hello,
I started my computer today and I kept hearing these clicking sounds, the sounds were the clicking sounds whenever you click on certain items, and my screen would blink really fast once in a while, so I figured I was infected with something. So then I look at my processes running and I go through the processes and find msmsgs.exe, now at first I thought it could be the microsoft messenger, but I already uninstalled it so I knew it had to be the worm, or I thought it was. So then I did a search on it and found out that it was a worm but I couldn't find out how to remove it. If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it. It sucks too because I just installed windows xp, I do have an anti-virus program called NOD32. Maybe I should get zone alarm too for the firewall? I know windows has it's own firewall as well though, or at least for windows xp sp2. Here is my log file from hijack this:

The weird thing is that for "O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" states that its the messenger, however from the reading I found out about the worm, it said that it installs itself in the registry, so I'm not sure how we are going to remove this dang thing! Thanks in advance.

Thanks,
Matt

Update: actually I'm not sure if it is from the agobot-nl worm because of this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ type in msmsgs.exe

Hello Matt, and welcome to BC.

Clicking sounds may be hardware related. I wouldn't know anything about that.

O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

is a legitimate entry, not malware.

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. If you have anything disabled in MSconfig, please go to Start>Run>type 'msconfig' (no quotes) and select the "Startup tab" and "Enable all" and run Hijackthis. Then post a new HijackThis log. After you run the hijackthis, run msconfig again and disable the items you wish to disable BEFORE you reboot.[/quote]

You have an older, therefore vulnerable, version of Java.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Will be waiting for the fresh HijackThis log with all the programs at startup.
