so i ran a recovery console and chkdsk /r and windows seems to come back up now.. is there anyway i can determined what crashed and if anything was damaged?

From the topic title and your posted resolution, I am assuming that this could be caused by a failing hard disk. Run a diagnostic test from your hard disk manufacturer to see if there is a problem with your hard disk.

Before you do anything, please make sure you have a good backup of all of your data.

You can easily check the SMART status of your hard drive with this free utility (just click on the SMART tab in it's interface): http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
