Please assist I need this machine going.

Win 7 Desktop Pavilion that has slowed big time. Half my programs with show in Task Manager but takes several minutes to actually open and sometime not at all.

I use CCleaner often to help clutter and keep registry clean

Malwarebytes show clean

Avast shows clean

Used the Windows Clean up utility

Defragmented the drive

Used HD Tune to run full scan on 500G Sata (the only Disk) and found no bad sectors

...and still even thumbnails for pics are slow populating.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

You mentioned you use CCleaner to keep the registry "clean". You should be aware registry cleaners are not best practice, and you should avoid using them.

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/373006/registry-cleaners/

In terms of steps to get Windows 7 to perform better, you might want to have a look at these:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15055/windows-7-optimize-windows-better-performance

And supply the info @hamluis requested.

Based on this your system has a number of issues.

Windows Search is non-functional -- the "content index catalog is corrupt" and the "content index database is corrupt" issues make that clear -- and this could be what is slowing down your system.

It appears your computer is deleting system restore points -- the volsnap "shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow" error points to issues with the way shadow copy storage is configured on your computer.

These are probably the two most critical. I would recommend opening the Services console (services.msc) and checking the status of the System Event Notification Service and Windows Search service. Make sure both are started and running. You should also probably open a command prompt with "run as administrator" and enter sfc /scannow .

As for the shadow copies, you may want to have a look at this:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/603ff95b-cf1e-4441-848e-1f93b76f94f2/volsnap-shadow-copies-deleted-every-boot?forum=w7itprogeneral

Your installation of MalwareBytes appears to be corrupted. There are issues with your Flight DataManager, Brother and MediaPlayer Classic applications. Try uninstalling them and reinstalling them.

That's just from a cursory overview. @hamluis may find other things.

Thank you Louis and sfltechguy. I peeped at the instructions in the link. On the face of it appears to be a slight challenge to figure out the process in the instructions.

I will tackle this a little later today

I purposely deleted restore points when trying to get rid of any rubbish hoping to create new Restore Points that are not filled with corrupt files. I also set the Windows Search to manual yesterday on a tip to see if it speed up the PC. Both were probably a bad idea and should of came here first.

When uninstalling a program I normally use Revo Uninstaller because it searches for left over files and registry entries to completely  clean leftovers. Not sure if that is not a good practice

I will uninstall the corrupted Programs mentioned and also attempt to figure out the instructions provided by Louis to correct the registry.

Thanks again

Before attempting Hamluis instruction I started with your instructions as they seemed the easiest to get out of the way. In that guide via link, it shows how to edit volsnap reg. entry. When creating DWORD and going back editing it says to give size you want it to be. I'd assume on the hexadecimal line, what kind numbers or size should I enter?

The absolute minimum you can set it to is 300MB. You'll want to make it large enough to store enough restore points based on how many days' worth you think you'll want to keep.

You can also configure this by going to the control panel, select System Properties, then select System Protection on the left-side menu. On the System Protection tab in the dialog box. There should be a link to "How much disk space is required?"  You can configure it from there.

If I had a system that was sluggish I would check Task Manager with the Show processes for all users enabled and sort it by the CPU column (drag edges and column headers so you can see everything).

What you want to see if the System Idle Process with the most CPU since that is really rhe amount of "free" time your CPU has so the more the better:

Take a look at your and describe it or better yet include a screenshot.  Somewhere here at BC are instructions for how to do that...

What do you see as using the most CPU?

As you watch does any Process jump to the top of the list periodically or stay there and if so what Process is that?

Then you can boot your system in Safe Mode and see how it behaves.

In Safe Mode things will look different since the generic video driver will be loaded but do you still have the same performance issues in Safe Mode or do you not?

To be sure you don't have a Windows Update hung up go to Control Panel, Windows update and change the Settings to Never check for updates, click OK to save the adjustment and restart.

That will usually put a stop to any hung up Windows updates.

After restarting how to things look now?

I would not follow those registry ideas for they are really for Windows XP (might work with Windows 7 - maybe) and for the error they are trying to fix in that topic the first thing to do is run a chkdsk with error correction (chkdsk  /r) which will solve that problem 99.9% of the time.  Never, never, never start with KB307545.  If you read that topic what finally worked was chkdsk - not all that other junk.

Your system is not presenting the symptoms that idea is supposed to fix (which it wont) so does it make sense to follow directions for a symptom your system doesn't have?

Windows 7 keeps it's own backup of the registry in a different place and recovering it is a different process which it doesn't sound like you need at the moment, but you can sure try those ideas if you want.

Another adjustment - go to Services and Disable the Windows Search Service and restart.  Eliminate that variable from the equation which makes up the problem.  You can turn it back on later when you are finished troubleshooting (but I wouldn't).

If you don't get some ideas that make sense pretty soon somebody is going to say that the "solution" is for you to reinstall your Windows so since that is probably coming you might as well tell us now if you have a genuine Windows SP1 installation media on hand or do you need to make some while you are still able to do so.

CPU usage is around 8% as I type. Chrome using the most . I can't remember the last time I've seen System Idle show up. The CPU never runs hard, no weird processes. I also notice in my Task Manager I have CPU checked to show in the column but it does not. That and a lot of other weird things lately.

I'm finding out that my registry is indeed fouled up like Hamluis suggested. I want to follow his instruction but I'm not savy enough to get it started, this day at least. I'm sure it's easy and I've done tougher task on the PC but I'm stumped on how to start the process. I reached out to the person who posted said fix in the link giving to me from Hamluis but haven't heard back.

In the meantime, I purchased another HDD to install to back-up some important files so nothing gets lost. Also another External HDD on the way. Once it gets here and I can make a back-up on a separate drive then I will tackle this. I have the nuclear option to reinstall windows but rather see if I can take the challenge repairing registry. I have genuine win7 installed but do not have the disc. Not sure the process to create one from what I have access to but I see tons of repair disc on ebay for pennies.

I do have partition "HP Recovery" but cannot remember anything about it. Under "recovery manager" it shows a folder but is empty.

Id the CPU column is checked and not showing up you need to drag the column headers/dividers to "uncover" the CPU column which is probably squished.

That is easy to recreate and fix:

That registry restore method will only work if you have System Restore points since it is wanting to use a "good" copy of the 5 registry files from one of your RPs.

But if you deleted all your RPs you can forget about that.  Even if you did have RPs how would you know which one has the "good" registry files?

And that method is not "easy".  You can pursue it if you want and see how far you get - let's see who provide instructions on how to do it.

Did you not see about Safe Mode or Windows Update adjustment for any improvement?

You can download a genuine Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium from my Google Drive:

From that you can create an installation CD/DVD or USB thumb drive to reinstall.

I think you might as well think about getting started on that because that is the direction you are being led.

And I choose not to get involved in reinstalling Windows (I fix things instead) but there should be some good advice around here somewhere

What do you mean?

Thank you for the link to Windows ISO. That in itself is a relief. I will stay on top of this and do what I can as far as my limits go. I can have the disc ready if all else fails.

My PC is running okay buy I'm noticing some crazy things that I've never had trouble with. I'm sure it's registry related. Things like, I get errors updating Chrome. That's never happened. A few days ago I had trouble installing any programs my temp folder had permissions wrong. Couldn't print to my thermal labeler. The list goes on and never had issues with this system up until several days ago. I don't tweak much and try to compute smart.

Almost forgot, isn't it possible boot from the disc and do Repair that would fix the registry while preserving my files that are on the same HD?

I looked at my Windows 7 Restore Points and see that the registry idea would not work anyway since Windows 7 does things differently than XP.

Beofre somebody suggest that idea again they should actually try it themselves and see if it works and just how "easy" it is(n't).

Windows 7 does have a Scheduled Task that makes a backup copy of the registry every 10 days at 12:00AM (or as soon as possible after that):

Attached File  Untitled.jpg   37.06KB   0 downloads

Note that in spite of what you may hear or read that the registry backup does not occur "sometimes", "every once in a while" or "when certain things happen".  It is every 10 days unless you change the task.

So if you were to look in the registry backup folder and check the time stamp of the files you can see how far back you could restore your registry.

In my case you can see that I could restore my registry back to the condition it was in last Friday:

Attached File  2.jpg   68.5KB   0 downloads

If the date/time of your registry backup is older than these problems you could restore that backup - and that is pretty easy, well documented and the procedure works (I've tested it):

Start around step 6:

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139576-startup-repair-infinite-loop-recovery.html

A repair will probably not fix the registry (if that is the problem).  A repair is sometimes good for no boot scenarios.

If you want you can make some bootable media from that ISO - you should have one of those anyway.

My regback folder shows the same date as yours the 27th. I'm not exactly sure if that is prior to my troubles or not because it sneaked up on me.

It was around that time so worth a try.

I've already burned the image onto a dvd.

I understand about repairing from the disc not working. I see Repair is not an option on the Guide that is on the disc.

If I do a new install, after my other HDD arrives, do I have to reinstall all the drivers from manufacturer website? If so, I'd assume I need to gather those and have handy?
