My monitor (Acer) on win xp is intermittently flickering to a pink/purple colour for a few seconds; Am I correct in assuming this is a terminal condition, or is it my video card, or something more pernicious?

Guessing this is an older monitor to correspond with an XP system, the symptom sounds very much like what can happen when a CCFL backlight lamp is on the way out. The best way to establish where the problem lies would be to use the monitor on a different computer, see if it still happens.
