Hello

This problem has been plaguing me for 5 months now. For the first 6 months I had it, it was fine but now for some reason my computer has been randomly freezing in the middle game play and forcing me to do a hard reset. It only happens in the middle of gaming and it's perfectly fine doing everything else. It runs for about 15 or so minutes in game play then it freezes with no BSOD or anything, it just freezes. This forces me to perform a hard reset where afterwards I can get a good couple hours worth before it does it again during game play.

As I had this built as a gaming computer this has been rather brutal for me. What's worse is that I have it sent back to the repair shop, who has helped me very well in the past, twice where they've stress tested each part, tested it during game play etc but they can't seem to replicate the crash. Even after a clean re-installation of the OS; it still crashes while I'm in a game.

As you can tell, I'm at my wits end. I don't know if the cause is hardware, software or my equipment. This computer wasn't cheap. While I can still use it for emails and work but I just want to play online with my friends.

Here are my specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate (64 Bit)

AMD FX™ - 9590 Eight-Core Processor 4.72 GHz

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB

32.0 GB RAM

Manufacturer/model of PSU?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

We need the requested information which the Speccy Snapshot will provide.  Please comply with this request.

The Speccy will provide us with most of the information we need, but one of the components it does not reference is the PSU.  Please post the make and model of your PSU.

When you are playing your games are you using games on your computer or are you playing on-line?

Please boot into Safe Mode to see if this problem persists there.  Safe Mode uses a native Windows graphics driver, so if this problem doesn't persist in Safe Mode this would point to a driver related problem.

To boot into Safe Mode begin with the computer shut down, start it and immediately start tapping the F8 key and continue till you see the Advance Boot Options.  The Advanced Boot Options will look similar to the image below.

JDwxfE2.png

You will need to use the up or down key to navigate to Safe Mode, you then will need to press Enter to select the option.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

My apologies for the late reply but there was a storm last night so I was forced offline. I only use games on my computer and it happens regardless if I am offline or not. Also the crash happens sooner the more graphically intense the game is. Such as it happens within 20 minutes of Total War Warhammer 2 which is my most graphically intense game where as it never happens on Stellaris which is much less so.

My PSU is XFX Pro 850W Core Edition Full Wired.

Here are the results from the MiniToolBox:

Testing the graphics in Safe Mode is very important in diagnosing what we have going on here.  Please run the computer in Safe Mode as I requested in post #3.

Slight issue, my games won't activate in Safe Mode. Can't even activate steam. Any suggestions?

Also with some more information on the issue. The first freeze happened at the end of January this year and since it didn't happen again throughout February I assumed it was nothing. It started happening again in mid march with a bit more frequency so I had my local repair shop whom I trust to check it out as they have helped me before and solved all my past issues with my older computers. Both times they had it they stress tested each hardware, play tested it and found no problem yet when I get it back the problems persisted. Now I can't play Total War for more that 30 mins without it freezing, admittedly after I restart the computer I can get a good 2 hours on that game. Other games freeze at times based on how graphically intense they are which is why Stellaris a rather low graphics game has never crashed yet. I've had a clean re-installation of my OS. As I said earlier I can do anything else on it, Youtube, Outlook, web search etc.

On a side note I don't have my computer's power cord connected to the main house socket, it's in a surge tower along with my monitor. The equipment I have connected to my tower is a GAMEMAX keyboard, G400s mouse, a X12 Turtle Beach Headset and nothing else.

As I am not computer savvy (I really wish I was) I'd like to hear your thoughts on what you think my issue is. Cause right now I am clueless and how can it test well at the shop when it doesn't here?

I think with the passage of time your game starts to save its files in your computer and now it becomes so heavy. That's why your computer hang in the middle of game. I think you should install your window again. Its the simple solution because i used to install window again when i face such situation.

I've already had my windows cleanly re installed recently so it doesn't have any saves on my computer.

Have you changed the NVIDIA driver since installing the graphics card?

One possibility for this problem is a Windows 7 update which changed graphics drivers in Windows 7.  Have you tried rolling back the driver in the Device Manager?

I tend to avoid updating drivers due to the problems I hear about the subject on the Nvidia forums. I have the 'if it's not broke then don't fix it' mentality. When the freezing started to become more frequent in March I thought it was a driver issue so I updated it which didn't work.

I've recently gotten my computer back after it's clean re installation so I'm not sure about the driver. If you could explain to me how to roll back the driver then I'll give it a try.

Press the Windows key OS4o0pO.png and the X key to open the Quick Link Menu, then select Device Manager, double click on Display adapters, then double click you the NVIDIA adapter.  When Properties opens click on the Driver tab, then click on Roll Back Driver.  There is a possibility that this option may be grayed out, if this happens try updating the driver.

Aye it's grayed out so I'll try updating the driver.

Ok I've installed the new driver, had to do it manually from the Geforce site. I've got to walk my dog now but when I get back I'll give Total War 2 a test to see if it worked. I'll let you know if it crashes or not.

Nope, unfortunately it still froze at about 30 minutes of gameplay.
