My last update on my laptop weeks ago was 1803 17134.112.

This afternoon I got an update and found the version is now 1709 16299.492 which was the update previous to the 1803 one!

Is MS going backwards?  What could cause this ? Any suggestions please.

Let's confirm what version you currently have.....

Tap the Windows key, type “winver” into the Start menu, and press Enter.

Alternate: You could also press Windows Key + R, type “winver” into the Run dialog, and press Enter.

Post back with the info

I never make the same mistake twice....I always make it 5 or 6 times just to be sure!

Thanks for responding.

Yes I always use winver and repeating it just now shows 1709 16299.492

I haven't reverted to an earlier version - could it have happened accidentally or on its own somehow?

Just now finished a whacking great April 2018 windows update (Now it's almost August but they do take time I know).

So I'm back to V. 1803  17134 167 (up from 112)

So glitch resolved.

If I may ask, how long did the upgrade take?

JohnC - I should have taken note of that but doing other things while it updated time slips by but it was about 90 minutes, certainly longer than my previous ones which take less than 1 hour.

What a nightmare! Luckily I have never needed all those options and I don't have the time to 'play with it'.

But thanks for the tip anyway - I might have found it useful.

Nightmare ?

Limited intelligence I think.

The instructions I gave were very easy to use if one had average or above average intelligence.

Sorry you found the instructions hard to use. :(

You didn't really have to tell the general public you are a moron. :(

"Limited intelligence I think."

Your 'intelligence' would surely inform you that your version of 'nightmare' is not universal. And ever heard of hyperbole?

I stated that I didn't need all those options and why I shouldn't spend time 'playing' on something I don't need. You assumed that meant 'hard to use'?

Then I wrote -'I might have found it useful'. How many clues do you need?

I speak from the age of 63.

My testosterone level has dropped a lot.

Glad you got your problem fixed. :)
