So I need to convert some .mov files to .mp4. However, every time I try to convert it, I end up losing most of the file. For example, a ten minute movie .mov file, after converting to .mp4 becomes a 40 second movie. How do I convert my files without losing the content?

What are you using to do the conversions, you might have found a bug in that software. Personally I've used handbrake https://handbrake.fr/ for video format conversion, if handbrake isn't what you're using already you might see if it handles the conversions any better, just pick a preset quality option and convert, no need to fiddle in the detailed settings panels.
