Late 2013 iMac 21.5 given to me.  I can't install OS. Linked to old owner.

I called the old owner and they said they got it from someone who could not unlink it.

It's a good machine for my daughter 8 years old to use and has an i5 processor, so it should be good enough.

Anyone know a work around?

Sorry its a 21.5

If someone else doesn't give you a way to install the OS then you could install a Linux OS on it. If that is something

you would want to do and you need assistance to that....start a new topic in the Linux & Unix Forum - BleepingComputer.com

Just curious....is that the screen size...27?

not sure what linked to old owner means? (never heard of this on the mac) you mean you cant login to one of the administrator accounts? If you can login to an admin account you should be able to install the OS.

It's link to his device list. Like find my device or ipad etc...

that's what apple told me.

I spoke to the guy who gave it to me and he said he had the same problem.

But, it sounds like he didn't try too hard.

I read those threads and I tried that.

It didn't work.

I spoke to the apple support.

They said I had to un link it.

But the original owner won't or cannot do it.

No good.  I already tried that.

Apple said it was link to a previous owner and needed to be un-linked.

The guy who gave it to me said he even took it to the apple store.

But maybe that was like 3 years ago and it was too new for them to break the rules or take pity on him and just do it.

You may want to try taking it to an apple store now and see what happens otherwise I think at this point you will need to do what buddy posted and look at a linux distro.

I'll go to the apple store and ask them.

As far as running linux...

The only reason I picked this up was so that my 7 year old daughter and 9 year old son could make and edit those youtube videos that the kids like to watch.

I heard that the pre-installed software was really easy to use and they both have ipads so it seemed like it might be easy for them.

Do you think if I bought a yosemite disk I could install it manually?

You can edit youtube videos in linux. There are multiple programs available.

As far as Yosemite, if you can wipe the drive the OS is available for download for free if you can get to the store on the Mac. If the download completes you may be able to create a bootable USB flash drive.

The macupdate link requires you to have a mac for download.

I know nothing about the unlinking/ linking problem. So, I think the key question to ask the Apple techs is if the

problem CAN BE solved by reinstalling or upgrading the existing OS. The reason I even think that might not be possible

is because of some Windows computers are locked by other means than the software on the hdd. Those required replacing

a chip on the mother boards when the password was lost.

wonder if you could install a new hard drive, then put your OS on that? I wonder if that would work? I'm thinking yes. so you are not able to boot from the OS dvd and install?

It will let me download, but not install.

I need to buy an old Yosemite install disk from amazon or something to try that.

I know I can figure out how to replace the physical drive, but...

Is it hard to install a fresh new hard drive?

Does it need to be an apple formatted drive?

I am not a Mac user. But I did look to see if you can create a bootable install

flash drive for a Mac on a Windows computer. It can be done

if you have only a Windows computer to work with.

I don't know if you have a bad hdd or if it is somehow protected with a password.
