There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no one best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware.Links to some related discussion topics:

There are a lot of choices out there:

The ubiquitous AVAST (probably installed with custom installation - MINIMAL PROTECTION).

AVIRA Free.

BitDefender Free (if you don't mind too much autopilot).

Kaspersky Free (Yes I don't believe the anti-russian propaganda everyone seems to sell lately).

Panda Dome Free (or whatever is called nowadays).

The title of this thread asks about free antivirus/antimalware software for Win7. I agree with the antivirus suggestions made in previous posts herein. I would like to add a suggestion for an antimalware app that is NOT also an antivirus. Namely, I heartily suggest trying OSArmor. It's free, VERY powerful, stable, feather-light, multi-layered, & 99% "set & forget". Works with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 (32\64-bit).

+1 To Bellgamin suggestion. OSArmor seems to be a very nice extra layer of protection to keep your pc safe.
