Firstly, I need to say that I didn't have internet access on my laptop for two years. I recently moved, now have internet access, and began updating Windows after constantly receiving a Windows help and Support pop up upon startup. I couldn't get the popup to go away, by clicking on the x or by right clicking in the lock bar. I have a Dell Vostro 1015 running Win 7.

The first real problem began immediately after installing the first set of updates. In resource manager, my cpu was consistently bouncing from 90% to 100%. From anything I did, even starting task manager. Since then, all windows updates have been applied, problem still exists and new problems have occured. I ran the Dell diagnostics using F12 and it detected a problem from my hard drive. The coded beeps went off, but I don't know how to decipher them. Diagnostics said it would pop up a new notification after reboot, but nothing happened. I ran a full comprehensive scan from the premium version of malware bytes, which took 4 hours, to have 0 threats detected. I then updated my BIOS from Dell's website. This is when things turned real ugly and I realized I needed outside help.

I ran another 4 hour Malwarebytes scan which showed nothing. Afterwards, I realized my keyboard was no longer working! I'm writing this with my phone. Restarting and shutting down made no difference. The single fan also hasn't ran since, even though my laptop is definitely running hot. Upon my last reboot, I navigated to the resource manager and saw my RAM was at 1582 in use, 319 on standby, and almost 2000 mb free. Since then, it now shows 1583 in use, 2118 in standby, and about 370 free. I've done nothing since reboot, only let it sit and idle. Hardfaults are mostly occuring from svchost and rundll.

My laptop ran perfectly fine before these updates, smoothly and efficiently. I don't know if my old Vostro is incapable of handling these updates or if something severely malfunctioned during updates. I'm definitely out of my league here and would greatly appreciate any help.

Edit:I just spent the last few hours entirely taking my laptop entirely apart and performing a thorough cleaning of dust particles. Keyboard now works, but all other problems persist.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

I would run the chkdsk /r command on the Windows partition...then post a new Speccy Snapshot url.  The data provided re the hard drive doesn't necessarily appear bad...but it is unlike that I waould expect to see.

Then, I would run the Dell Diagnostics and post any message from such re the status of the hard drive.

No indications of system/drive overheating or other anomalous behavior that I can see.

Louis.

I tried using the  chkdsk /r command and it popped up DOS for a second, then vanished. Even manually clicked on the program using search, same result. Am I using that command wrong? Since than, I can't access my start menu. Every time I click on it, that Windows Help and Support popup appears and closes the start menu. I can't get rid of that popup. Right clicking on it in the task bar brings up the close option for a split second, then disappears. Clicking the x closes it and a new one promptly opens. Really frustrating. Seems the only way to get rid of it is to open up Chrome. And that only works 50% of the time. Sometimes as soon as I load Chrome, it seemingly prompts a new window, which takes me right to a Chrome help page. ???

I ran the Dell diagnostic again, with the same result. Always the same beep code: One beep, pause, four beeps, pause, six beeps. And still says some error about the hard drive. Last time I ran Speccy, computer was entirely idle. This was with a very, VERY simple Idle flash game, this forum page, and task manager open.

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/Wl4XtwAPQdwxcXoyk3zXoza

Is all that memory usage from the Chrome running processes typical? In total, they easily exceed 500 mb. My CPU was at 100% usage with this screen shot, according to task manager.

500MB of RAM is insignificant on a system with 4GB installed.  It is common for browsers and security programs to use 300MB or more for a process.

I don't use Chrome, I favor Firefox or IE 11...I consider Chrome a memory hog and am not comfortable with it and the way that it operates.

When I ask for details of an error message...please post the exact wording of the message as it appears onscreen.

Louis

Ah ok, apologies. When running Dell diagnostics, I get this error message:

Error Code 0146.

Msg: Error Code 2000-0146

Msg: Hard Drive 0 - self test log contains previous error(s)

The given error code and message can be used by Dell Technical Support to help diagnose the problem.

OK, let's try this.

Download SeaTools for Windows, run the long generic diagnostic.  Let us know if the drive passes or fails.  No need to post any part of the results reflected, just tell us the final verdict.

SeaTools For Windows Download - http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

Both the guide and download itself are reflected at the above link.

@hamluis #8

Just to add my tuppence worth, this computer - according to the Speccy report - does not have any A/V running.

Speccy shows Malwarebytes as the A/V but MBAM is not an A/V. Windows Defender was running, but is now disabled. According to the update record it was running upto a date given as 6/12/2018 - which I take to be the 12th of June - as that is the last date given for a Defender update. But Windows Defender as implemented in Vista and Win 7 is not an A/V, more a malware scanner.

American and European date formats cause untold confusion !

I am going to be away until about the 22nd October. Time on-line will be reduced and my internet access may be limited. PMs may not be replied to as quickly as normal !

My apologies for the delayed response. Every Seatool scan was deemed as pass.
