Soundcards are a waste of money these days, most on board sound is fine.

If you need top of the like sound there are better alternatives to soundcards, soundcards these days are irrelevant its not 1997 anymore

I agree.  Certainly the more high end motherboards have excellent audio these days.  The exception would perhaps be if you buy a cheap motherboard with a very basic sound stage and you want something better.  Serious audiophiles with the computer hooked up to very expensive hifi headphones or stereo amps and speakers etc. might still use an outboard DAC/headphone amp, while musicians or producers using professional mics, studio monitors etc will likely use a USB audio interface.  Note - The more high end gaming headsets which connect via USB will bypass the computers sound card - they act as a seperate audio device ("sound card") in their own right.
