Hi, my hard drive is almost always at 100% disk usage when my computer is running, sometimes going lower if no programs are running, but if I try to run anything, it will jump back up to 100%. It’s been happening since around summer last year, but I don’t remember anything in particular causing it. I’ve tried every fix under the sun to no avail, and I even replaced the hard drive with another at Christmas and reinstalled windows 10. Unfortunately, this one is noisier than the last so it’s even more annoying when under stress.

If it’s useful, here’s a pic of the resource monitor and task manager, and also of crystaldiskinfo. Oh and here's my specs if you need them. By the looks of it the hard drive itself is fine, which makes sense being as it was replaced lol. I’m not a computer expert but was wondering if this could be an issue somewhere else, like the motherboard? And how would I go about checking if that’s the case?

Thanks.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

From what I can see, he's got a "rogue" CompaTelRunner.  See the results of this search:  https://duckduckgo.com/?q=compatelrunner.exe+windows+10

The first thing I'd do is disable that, since you already have Windows 10.  It seems to have a track record with regard to munching CPU and/or Disk.

Well...I don't see a single thing indicating that there's unusual disk activity...RAM usage...or CPU utilization.  What gives you the idea that your system is off-center?

What are you looking at...when you assert 100% disk usage?

The task manager shows 100% disk usage most of the time. I wouldn't really be bothered if there weren't any other issues, but my computer has become really slow to load programs, games, etc. Even simple things like right clicking, or opening a folder can take longer than the norm.

If you think you have an issue then at this juncture I'd suggest using the "Clean Boot" process of elimination to determine what's hogging disc r/w cycles.

See the step-by-step instructions for a clean boot from member dc3 here:  https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/677263/serious-malware-attack/#entry4496622

Tried what he said, unfortunately the problem persisted even when they were all disabled.

I've got nothing more, then.

The only thing I could suggest is Doing a Completely Clean Install of Windows 10, making sure to include the step that wipes the HDD.
