As per a Business Insider report, GitHub is seriously considering a $5 billion buyout from Microsoft.

In case you didn’t know, GitHub is the largest software developer’s community with more than 23 million individual developers from over a million organizations worldwide. A huge number of open source projects use GitHub for development and for hosting their source code. Though GitHub is famous for open source projects, it is a private limited company.

Doubtful.  This is more like an "embrace and cull for everything it's good for" situation.

I don't think that MS is going to extinguish Github any more than their having embraced Linux is an attempt to extinguish it.  Keep your friends close, and your "enemies" closer.

The question I suppose, is how many OS projects will want to stay with Github once they know it's owned by Microsoft ?

I expect there may be a significant Exodus from Github once this deal is verified.

Its already happening, mainly from the tin foil hats.

Personally I am not bothered, plenty of alternatives to github so no need to panic

Were all doomed, ahh...ahh...ahhh!  Whoa...I'm not supposed to panic right?

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock. Subject to customary closing conditions and completion of regulatory review, the acquisition is expected to close by the end of the calendar year.
