Hi

My Hard drive has been leaking available disk space at about an average rate of about 100k bytes per second. I have previously raised a ticket on the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum and have now been advised to post up the issue on this forum. I have attached a link to this prior post for your reference.

Hard drives don't leak memory...they only lose storage space.

What Is A Memory Leak?

Are you saying that you believe that you have a memory leak?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Moved topic from Internal Hardware to W10 Spt, which I believe to be the more suitable forum for your issues.

Louis

Hi Louis

I used the term "memory leak" not knowing that was an actual IT jargon thing. I just used the term thinking it sounded a good summary for the subject line.

Microsoft describes a memory leak as follow...

A memory leak occurs when a process allocates memory from the paged or nonpaged pools, but does not free the memory. As a result, these limited pools of memory are depleted over time, causing Windows to slow down. If memory is completely depleted, failures may result.

Microsoft has a good article which explains the different types of memory leaks, how to determine if you have one, and how to resolve it.  You can find the article here.

Your Catalyst Control Centre seems to have run amok !  I would uninstall it through Programs and features in Control panel then see if you suffer any graphics problems. On my reading of the available information you probably won't have any problems without it but if you do you can re-install it from AMD/Radeon.

I would also go into to Programs and features and uninstall MS Visual C++, all versions. I don't think I have ever seen a computer with as many versions of this software as yours. Yes, it is needed for playing games but if a game needs it, it will either install it itself or tell you it needs it, then you can get that veersion from MS.

Ok...

At the start of following the instructions I had 808, 931, 598, 336 bytes

I deleted all the MS Visual C++ and when I checked I had 807, 761, 489, 920 bytes

I then looked to reboot the computer and at point of closing down it reported 807, 760, 539, 648 bytes

Post rebooting it reports 807, 776, 432, 128.

At point of finishing typing the above I have 808, 118, 947, 840 bytes (gone up so yea! or is this because I deleted stuff?)

Awaiting 30 seconds before checking it is now down to 808, 118, 636, 544

I wasn't able to remove the Catalyst Control Panel as this wasn't an option. There were no options under AMD, or Radeon which seems to be the replacement software.

Capture%20-%20Unstall%201_zpsdiioqtvh.pn

Capture%20-%20Unstall%202_zps5muigofq.pn

Upon linking the images in, it is now reporting 808, 116, 355, 072 bytes available. Awaiting another minute and now reporting 808, 113, 975, 296 bytes :(

Do you have anything that looks like the item highlighted in light gray here in either your system tray or in the overflow area when you hit the chevron (which is what appears below)?:

overflow_area.jpg

If you double click on it, do you get Radeon Settings opening up?  It should look something like the below and should have an Update tab or button somewhere.  I've activated mine for this screen shot.  What shows is the latest version for R7, and I believe the same version applies to R5 as well.  In any case, definitely check for updates if you can and install them if they exist.:

I have previously seen that screen before and I have seen the little setting thing before but usually not in the system tray. Normally I would need to manually open it up. Can't seem to find it on my PC now. Not sure when I appeared to have uninstalled it.

Is it a good idea to reinstall?

I would.  I have had much better luck with AMD controlling the updates for the graphics than Microsoft.

I just reinstalled the latest version of the Catalyst (I think that's what AMD calls it, the AMD site figures out what you need based on your hardware) controls for the Radeon Graphics on another of my laptops just three days ago.  It had somehow been removed, possibly by me, and I was still back in version 16 dot something.  It's now up to version 18, too.

If I search on "radeon" in Cortana/Windows search it's the first thing that comes up.  You could try that to see if it's "hiding somewhere" on your system.

Upon rebooting I had 805,919,870,976 bytes.

A minute late I had 805,907,345,408 bytes

Another minute I had 805,901,594,624 bytes

HD still making noises.

John,

Well, it looks like your problem of every increasing disk space usage has been solved.   A big thanks to Chris Cosgrove for nailing the culprit!

If you haven't taken a full system image backup I'd be doing that ASAP if I had a noisy HDD.  Then you can download SeaTools for Windows and run the "Short Generic" test on your HDD.  If that fails then immediately seek a replacement HDD (or SSD if you wish to upgrade) and if it passes then perform the "Long Generic" test.  If that fails, same advice as before.  If it passes, I don't know what to tell you.  I know I don't trust HDDs that suddenly begin making any sound that's out of the ordinary for them since they were new.

Oh I'm not concerned with the HD dying. You know when you boot up and you hear the whirring of the disk starting to spin and then you get the periodical low volume clicking that suggests it is reading the disk quickly - it is that sound. It is making the quiet sound my HD has always made. Except usually after everything has stopped loading the activity isn't stopping.

What my concern is the fact that on all other computers I have used, if I check the free space and then leave the computer for 15 minutes doing nothing then I would expect the free space to remain the same. With my PC it is dropping about 100k bytes a second and then recovering a lot of the space later. That is not behavious I am used to my computers down the years doing.

So update. I logged on today and it reported 804,709,269,504 bytes.

I read this thread and made a point of creating a new restore point and post this I had 804,198,297,600 bytes.

I watched Twitch for about 15 minutes and it dropped to 803,856,833,712.

I then tried to play Football Manager via Steam and I got an error message which means I will need to reinstall. Steam did an update and the available HD memory dropped to 798,299,389,952 bytes. A certain WTF but I've just installed.

I've rebooted the computer and it is now reporting 791,813,582,848 bytes.

You guys seem to think all is well now, but could someone explain why the numbers are constantly jumping around? If I am not actively doing stuff then I would expect it to be constant?

No, you shouldn't expect it to be constant, and I have no idea where you ever got the idea it should, particularly if you're looking at the value at the finest level of granularity:  bytes.

Operating systems are constantly doing things that you're not aware of that require the use of disc space.  When a system is "idle" it's idle only from appearances to the end user.  If your machine has a disc activity light pay attention to it when the system is "idle" as it will very often start flashing for anything from a few seconds to minutes, because the OS is doing something like scanning files, downloading updates, running a scheduled defrag, and the list goes on and on.

If you look at disc space at the granularity of bytes you should expect to see almost constant changes up and down if a machine is powered up.
