About a month or so ago, I found a curious message that showed up in the lower right corner of my monitor telling me "Windows not activated". I pretty much ignored it as everything was running ok, but this morning the latest Windows update fouled my Hotmail account, telling me the settings are out of date, and when I go to try to fix them, I get an error message telling me "Something went wrong. We are unable to do that"

It seems I need to upgrade to Windows 10 pro or something, and there's a product id and product key, with instructions to change the product key. When I attempt that, I'm informed that the product key is wrong.

Somehow the previous update has me with the Pro version instead of the Home version, and I can't change settings or any other info without activating the darned Windows 10.......

I'm really baffled here.  Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have also discovered that I am unable to open pdf's that I have downloaded, and my download folder is empty as well.  Curious.

I have had Win 10 since the free download a couple years ago.  I had a computer built for me in Nov or Dec of 2017.

Up until a month ago everything was great, then all of a sudden this "Activate Windows" message popped up.

BTW, I just downloaded the Adobe Acrobat reader, so I'm ok with pdf's now.

Some updates have borked the activation. If you live in the States then call the below number and wait for a live person. Explain you have had a Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 for two years. They will help you activate the computer.

There have been numerous reports of Windows 10 installation reporting that their installation is not activated, even though when check previously it was seen to be activated.  To determine if this is the case you can do the following.

Two places to check,

1. Press the Windows key OS4o0pO.png and the X key to open the Quick Link Menu.

When the menu opens select System.  This will display your Device Specifications which includes the Product ID.  This should include the digital entitlement, this is your product code.  You can call Microsoft to confirm if this is a legitimate product code.

2. Click on Search in the taskbar, type in activationActivation System settings will appear, click on this to view the activation status.

If you call Microsoft they should be willing to help you determine if there is a problem with the activation.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I contacted Microsoft support, but had to hang up due to my inability to understand the fellow I was talking to. This could take a while.

I'm going to see if they have a chat on line.

The Activation section in the Settings app should give you enough information to work out why Windows can’t activate. It’s worth trying a different network connection if possible, so switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet or vice versa to see if that helps.
