This laptop is for my daughter, who is moving to Germany for one year and then to college for four years.  We want it to be reliable for five years, have adequate RAM and hard drive capacity to deal with the usual cumulation of software and data over a long period of usage. Usage will be mainly web browsing, email, writing, skyping, and lots of music listening/downloading and video watching.  We’re open to Mac or PC.  More info in the template below.

TEMPLATE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Laptop or Desktop?  Laptop

My budget for the new computer is:  around $1500, but lower would be a plus

What are the primary uses for this computer (IE: mail, web browsing, programming, games, etc)?  A: web browsing, email, writing, skyping, and lots of music listening/downloading and video watching

What software do you intend on using on the computer?  just a browser, an office suite, a drawing program

Do you play games? If so, what type of games?  No.

Do you tend to have a lot of programs running at the same time, or do you close every program when you are done using it?  A web browser with many tabs open.  Maybe a word processor too.

Do you store a lot of pictures or music on the computer?  Yes, lots of music.

Will you be overclocking?  No.

Location for online shopping/shipment/prices?  NJ 07043

How many monitors are you planning to use?  No external monitor.  Want the screen size to be 13 inches OR SMALLER (not larger).

Do you need peripherals?  Would really like an internal CD/DVD drive, at least 2 USB ports, and some kind of port that will allow video to be output to a TV set (like the Thunderbolt port works on a Mac Pro).

OS?  Needs to be installed already.  Windows or Mac okay.

Any particular reason why you are upgrading?  New purchase, student going away to college.

OTHER NOTES
Weight:  up to 4.5 pounds is okay, but lighter would be better

Reliability is important.

It should have adequate RAM and hard drive capacity to deal with the usual cumulation of software and data over a long period of usage.  Willing to pay a little more for it to last longer.

Thanks for ideas,

Roger
