I've turned off a lot of crap in the StartUp menu, defragged, let the system manage virtual memory, yet my system is running quite slow. (The largest two supplemental processes running are Spy Sweeper and AVG.) I suspect I need more memory, since it appears to be absolutely wearing out the hard drive when using most programs. Here are the specifics:

IBM Thinkpad R40
XP-SP2 V5.1
BIOS: 1210/1PET53WW(1.21)
Pentium M 1300 MHZ
CPU Speed: 1024
Video Memory: 32 MB
MEMORY: Total-510, Free-32, Used-478, Load-93%
HD: Total-33.9, Free-7.6, Used-26.3

If memory is indeed the issue, I've never upgraded Laptop memory and don't really know where to get it and how difficult it is to install. Thanks in advance for your valued advice!!!

Glad to hear your issue is resolved! For the benefit of others, this line

MEMORY: Total-510, Free-32, Used-478, Load-93%

says you are out of RAM and simply need to install more.
