I have a 5 year old Acer Travelmate running Win7 Pro.  I've updated the Travelmate with a new SSD.  I reinstalled Win7 thereon from system recovery disks made using the Acer Recovery Management program after extracting the old HDD, replacing with the new SSD.

I updated using MS Update including IE11 and all was fine until I got a 2018-02 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based systems (KB4093118) which resulted in : Installation Status - Failed, Error code 8024200D

I have run through the Fix Windows Update Errors

I have run the Windows Update Troubleshooter,

I have tried renaming the SystemDistribution and Catroot2 folders as recommended.  The first would but the Catroot2 would not - even in Safe Mode.

I've searched on here but Go-the-Power's recommendations are for specific machines and I'm likely not sufficiently Techy to be able to follow through.

I'm contemplating now just cloning my old HDD onto the SSD

Is there a better solution?

Thanks, Jerry

PS - why can I not paste text into this post dialogue box?

Well...have any of the subsequent (March, April, May) rollups installed properly?

IMO...an individual update may "fail" at any point in time when using Windows Update...for various reasons.  It's not the end of the world when that happens and may not even indicate a problem.

Thanks for your response Louis.

No, none of the earlier security updates would install.

As advised above, renaming the SystemDistribution folder hid it from Windows so it created a new blank version and then tried to install the update KB4103718 which is the 2018-05 version - to no avail.

The catroot2 folder cannot be renamed while Windows is in operation.  Whether starting a new one of those would help or not, I know not, or how.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

I do not really want to get involved with any Windows Update issues anymore but can shed some light on this topic.

FWIW The error means:

0x8024200D WU_E_UH_NEEDANOTHERDOWNLOAD The update handler did not install the update because it needs to be downloaded again.

Regarding the common practice of resetting Windows Update if you followed these directions from Microsoft (and many other sources) they are impossible to work:

Rename software distribution backup folders

  1. From Start, search for cmd
  2. Select Command Prompt from the results
  3. At the Command Prompt, type the following and then push Enter:

    Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
  4. When that command completes, type the following and then push Enter:

    Ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
  5. Close the Command Prompt window, and reboot your computer.

The reason those directions will never work is because you can't rename the folders while some Windows Services are running and Safe Mode will not help you either.  Even in the Microsoft community forums the Microsoft engaged alleged "experts" still recommend that and since it is impossible to work that tells you that these Microsoft engaged alleged "experts" have never followed their own advice to see if things work or not.

The better instructions that will work would be to open a Command Prompt as Administrator and stop some Services by issuing the following commands one at a time pressing the Enter key after each:

net  stop  bits

net  stop  wuauserv

net  stop  appidsvc

net  stop  cryptsvc

Then you can successfully rename the folders with the previous commands:

Ren   %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution    SoftwareDistribution.bak

Ren   %systemroot%\system32\catroot2   catroot2.bak

Then when you restart your system, the Services will start up again and the folders will be recreated and populated (may take several minutes).

What nobody ever seems to mention about that process is that the Windows Update history will be wiped out but not the list of installed updates and there are a few other potential consequences involving language packs which most people are not using.

You might then set your Windows Update settings to Never check for updates (the best setting if you want to be in charge of your system instead of Microsoft), then restart your system which will stop any pending updates, then visit the Microsoft Update catalog and download that KB4093118 from there and see if you can install it manually.

Thank you Josie, very helpful.

Yes I found those renaming instructions did not work, at least for the catroot2 folder and understood the reason why, but knew too little to turn off those services.  I did find though that I can rename the SoftwareDistibution folder using Windows Explorer even whilst running Win7 in normal mode.  Having a new one did not help as one would expect.

I will wait on a further response from Louis before I take any further action.

Thank you again for your advice .......... I have turned on Never update

Jerry

Looking at the IE errors...the installation of AVS software which has previously been deemed questionable by some...and the posted problems with Kaspersky...I would tend to investigate the possibiility of malware rather than focusing on a Windows Update issue.  No affiliation between Kaspersky and Windows Update but both rely on IE.  A common characteristic of malware involves problems with updating anything and/or accessing Microsoft.

I would open a new topic in the Am I Infected forum...to refute/affirm the possibility of malware.

Louis

Jerry, always use these directions when you do a clean install of Windows 7, and in fact, I don't think it will hurt to do it now.  If one is already installed it will tell you, then just move to the next one.

Setting Windows Update to Never check puts you in charge of what updates get installed on your system instead of Microsoft.

Of course you will have to check yourself at least every Patch Tuesday or so but it will let you choose which updates to install, which to skip and which to hide.

For example you would always want to hide any hardware driver updates since installing the ones that are offered in Windows Update sometimes result in topics that have titles like "Windows Update broke my computer".

You can disable that hardware driver update feature completely though (a recommended adjustment) but it never hurts to check every update to see what it is all about.

You can also avoid the MS snooping/spyware update disguised as "telemetry" which periodically transmit information about your system back to Microsoft.  What?  You didn't know there was such a thing?  Unless you trust MS you can avoid those too when MS tries to sneak them in on you - even when you hide them they tend to show up again later.

A good idea is to just install updates that have the word "Security" in them and then think about or investigate the rest to see if you really need them or not.

As far as is KB4093118 concerned - it was problematic when it first came out, MS says they fixed the problems but it still appears to be problematic as you can see with some Google searches.

If it fails to install manually after downloading, quit messing around with wild goose chase ideas, hide the update it and move on as security updates are cumulative and the next month will have any fixes.

I think MS is still working on that update so you can always come back in a few days and try it again.

You could just leave things as they are and like many folks put your trust in Microsoft not to snoop or spy on you, hope you never get an afflicted driver update that results in a no boot scenario and install all offered updates as they come in.

Not me though.

Well, thank you all for the advices.  I will cogitate and discuss with my IT "expert" son-in-law

............... who may read this  :hello:

.............. before proceeding.

Cheers, Jerry

I will report back on successfull resolution.

P.S. I want to think that malware is unlikely as the SSD was brand new and a clean install of W7 should surely not add malware.  In the 2 weeks since I installed the SSD I have not been wandering to dubious sites around the net.  However, I will investigate.

I have run the first one before and it did not help.

The second one reported it is "Not appropriate to this computer"

Worth a try.  Sorry, I don't use the OEM Install media much at all, I use a Retail Disk that is devoid of all the junk that come on those disks, and installs/updates a little different.

I'll run MTB on my Windows 7 Pro soon just to see if I get all those funky looking language pack looking things are on my machine also.

I updated using MS Update including IE11

Did you download IE, or just let the Updater get it?

I've used the method at the link I provided and works every time, though is a little different with OEM Installs.

Did you get it Activated?
