Acer Laptop, Travelmate TMP453-M running Windows 7 Pro.

I prepared recovery disks some time ago using the Acer program.  Everything worked fine.

Recently I replaced the HDD with a Sandisk SSD Plus and re-installed my Win7 from the recovery disks and updated everything from MS etc.  All seemed OK except the fan ran full bore all the time.  Speccy showed the CPU was running at about 70°C.  So I dismantled the laptop, removed and blew the fan out with air, cleaned off the heat conducting film from the CPU and copper conductor, pasted on some (very little) compound and replaced everything.  Speccy then reported a running temp of <40°C even with a stress test running,

But I had problems with USB ports which were sorted by re-installing the driver.

Now I still have 2 problems:

  • Previously if I hit the caps lock, num lock or scroll lock keys a little padlock appeared showing whether the function was locked/unlocked.  It no longer appears.
  • More significant, is that previously Fn+F3 would bring up a dialogue box allowing me to turn on/off the wireless and/or Bluetooth functions.  This does not happen now.

I phoned Acer Support on 0800 046 5242 only to be told this was a hardware problem not software and he put the phone down.

Well the F3 key works OK 'cos I can case change words in MS Word which uses Shift+F3.  F7 works OK to turn on/off the touch pad.  However Fn+▲ and Fn+▼ (scroll up/down) do not increase the speaker sound level whilst Fn+◄, Fn+►does work to change screen brightness.

Seems to me this is not a hardware but a software problem (if drivers are software).

All drivers are reported as up to date.  The wireless driver I re-installed but no change.

Any advice welcomed.

Thanks, Jerry

Per this Acer thread the program is Launch Manager. You can download it form your support site.

By pressing the Windows key + X in Windows 7 the Mobility center will open allowing you to enable and disable Wifi. Not sure about Bluetooth though.

BRILLIANT   :)

Thank you very much John, that sorted it.

I had to remove Launch Manager first because it would not install on top of the existing and then re-install from the Drivers CD I made when I made the restore disk.

I'm very happy now.

The Windows+X function was new to me also.  Very good again, Ta.

Best wishes, Jerry
