Problem: Firstly, I would just like to thank you for taking your time to read about my problems. The problem that I am experiencing is incredibly new to me and has caused havoc upon my PC for about a month now. Now, to try and describe the problem. After testing multiple solutions, non have seemed to fix the issue and I am coming to a stand still on diagnosing and fixing the problem. The second problem is that I don't have infinite money to spend on solving this issue as I would have just built a new PC and be done with it. The actual problem itself used to happen every 2-3 days and since then I have reduced the problem down to a week; therefore creating this random cycle. Firstly, the screen goes black (but the power is still on for the PC) and windows restarts. Sometimes, its noticeable if its going to do it (PC slows down, everything stops responding, USB input devices fail to load etc) and it mainly happens when using Google Chrome but has happened while playing games or just doing nothing(idle). Sometimes, the problem occurs a couple minutes after booting my computer and sometimes it will do it several hours later after booting my computer.

Symptoms/potential symptoms of the problem (some of theses could be separate issues):

  • The screen goes black, the power stays on, but windows restarts

  • This problem also happens to another computer downstairs (but they restart at different times and different days etc)

  • Sometimes USB based devices fail to load; most of the time its the USB WiFi adaptor that fails to load, but a few hours later (turned on my pc) it was the mouse failing to load

  • After about 2 weeks it put my OS into a boot loop (was able to fix that) but at the same time my PSU and GPU died (maybe power surge?)

Any error messages etc?

  • No bluescreens etc to help in giving a code (its black screen with a restart)

  • I've checked the event viewer a couple times after the restarts and the most recent one stated a critical Kernel power error(Event ID 41) and was the error for the last three random restarts; however before that, it was just random errors such as the North Bridge failing (motherboard)

Attempted solutions:

  • Replaced faulty parts according to PC doctor which was the GPU and PSU (GPU wasn't displaying things correctly, green windows logo etc)

  • I've turned the socket of the left (xbox was plugged into) off when using my computer and this actually reduced the frequency that the problem occured

  • Virus scanned with Windows defender and Malwarebytes nothing turns up

  • Installed a new version of Windows

  • Currently testing a wired connection over wireless (computer downstairs is wired though) but it could be the TP-Link wifi adapter causing the problem for this computer

My suspicions:

  • The motherboard seems like the most likely candidate here; most of the problems have some kind of connection to the motherboard (but it passed the test on PC doctor)

  • Power surge occurring as a result of a faulty device in the house or even in the street that I live in (maybe get an surge protected APC to provide emergency power?)

  • One of my USB peripheral (or several) are causing system instability (Could test them ll but the problem is not forcible; so testing them one by one is slow)

  • Could be the ROM failing to load certain critical processes (reset the CMOS battery?)

Specifications:

OS = Windows 10 Home edition x64

Motherboard = Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 with a BIOS version of F4(10/19/2012) update; couldn't find any new updates for this board

CPU = AMD FX-4300 quad-core running between 1.4-4GHz at idle (max 4.2GHz)

Memory/RAM = DDR3 16GB (2x8) not sure on the brand

GPU = NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4gb

PSU = Corsair bronze 740W

Storage = 2TB HDD (Seagate)

Once again, thank you for taking your time to either read and/or help me with this strange but annoying problem.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Also, the problem just occured again. Date and time was 26/04/2018 and was Kernel-Power (Event ID 41) (TaskCategory = 63).

Last time it did this was on the 24/04/2018 with the same error

And before this it was the 22/04/2018

However, before this it hadn't done it since the 11th of April, which was when I switched the socket off next to my PC (had the xbox plugged into it).

Furthermore it turns out that it wasn't the TP-Link wifi card as I am currently using wired Ethernet (cat5e).

Re Kernel Power Event 41.

Me...I would be concerned about those "bad block" errors reflected in Event Viewer.  I would download SeaTools for Windows and run the long generic test on your hard drive.  Test will take about 3 hours.  When finished, just post a note to let us know whether it passed or failed the long diagnostic.

Ok, I ran the long generic test and the test failed instantly. So I am going to try and run the test once more to see if it was a one off or I will run the seaTools DOS as recommended.

Fail info:

Now is a good time to make sure you have a current backup of your important data.

Unfortunately, your Seagate product has failed an important diagnostic test, possibly caused by problem sectors which are difficult to read.  Seagate recommends that you run SeaTools for DOS, which has the ability to repair most problem sectors.  SeaTools for DOS may be able to save you from the inconvenience and down time of exchanging the drive.  For more information on this subject see our online FAQ:

Ok, so I read about the failure and most are suggesting that the hard-drive is failing. This is quite odd as it dosen't seem to be making any noices, has passed PC doctor tests etc. Furthermore would this really be causing my PC to just reboot without an error code or anything?

Just as a reminder the problem that is occurring is that the screen will go black (PC still has power; LED lights are still on, all the parts are still running) and the system will restart.

I want to be as certain as possible as I have just forked out for a new GPU and PSU as the PC doctor stated that they were dead (and the GPU was obviously dead due to the green windows logo and colours not displaying properly).

Once again, thanks for the help so far hamluis!

Well...Seagate's diagnostic...on a Seagate drive...I would not give it another thought, but would immediately prepare to replace the drive.  Not to say that diagnostics cannot err on the side of caution...but I like erring on the side of caution when it comes to replacing a hard drive which fails the drive manufacturer's diagnostic.

If you don't already have a current backup of everything on that drive...that should be your next effort, IMO.

Hello, just before I buy a new HDD, I found some found.000 files on my C: (HDD). Will they give a reason into why their is a "bad block" occurring on my HDD? or is just that the HDD is dying and is just failing? I'm just trying to understand how this problem occurred so that I can learn about this problem and fix them in the future.

Thanks for the help on everything so far!

Also, just to reiterate; the problem occurs on another PC downstairs.
