I tried to follow the directions for Hijackthis. I created a folder on my C drive and named it Hijackthis, unzipped the file to the Hijackthis folder and ran a scan. When I got to the part to Save log I designated it to save the log in the Hijackthis folder I had created and I got the following pop-up window:

Windows Installer

Incorrect command line parameters
Windows Installer.V.2.2600.2
Copyright 2000 Microsoft Corporation
All rights reserved
Portions of this software are based
in part on the work of the Independent JPEG Group

I tried it several times with the same results. Any idea what I should do now?

Thanks,

Mary

No, this hasn't been resolved.
I still can't run save HJT log. How would I know if I have to replace Notepad, and how would I do so if need be?

Thanks,
Mary

Go to this page :

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html#notepad

Download the appropriate notepad for your operating system and extract notepad.exe and place it all the locations it says for your operating system. Then attempt to run hijackthis and create a log

I downloaded and unzipped the notepad.exe as you said, but I don't understand what you meant when you said to "place it all the locations it says for your operating system."

Please tell me what you meant. (Sorry to be so dense)

Thanks,
Mary

Find where you extracted notepad.exe and copy it into c:\windows.

If it asks if you would like to overwrite the file, allow it to do so

I located and copied the notepad.exe file to Windows folder. It asked if it should replace the file and I said yes. I then tried running HJT again, and it scanned, but when I tried to save the log I got the same message:

"Windows Installer

Incorrect command line parameters
Windows Installer.V.2.2600.2
Copyright 2000 Microsoft Corporation
All rights reserved
Portions of this software are based
in part on the work of the Independent JPEG Group"

Did I skip something? What should I try next?

Thanks,
Mary

Its very confusing. Rename the hijackthis.exe file to test.exe and try running and saving a log and see if that helps get past this error

I changed the hjt.exe to test.exe and ran it again. It scanned but when I tried to save it I got the same response. If it confuses you, with all your skill and ability, imagine how befuddled I am.
