Windows 7, HP Pavilion a6110n PC, desktop.  Turned on computer after power outage and heard Three quick beeps then a few seconds later, three beeps, etc.  Repeats maybe 6=10 times.  The computer continues to boot up so no problem there.  I believe this old computer is low on memory but the guys at Best Buy geek desk said they didn't even have the memory thing I could plug in.  My computer too old, I guess.  Any suggestions aside from buying a new one?

Well...that's a pretty old system...by my standards...but let's take a look for clues.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Louis, I followed your directions to download and install Speccy from FileHippo link.  Ran it and got report.  Clicked on file, publish snapshot, yes, copy to clipboard.  The report is on my desktop but I am unable to paste it in this area.  Actually I'm unable to paste anything into this area.

Do you want to understand the beep code, see about adding more memory or both?

If you want help looking a the details of the system:

Tell us the serial number of the system so we can look  it up on the HP Support site.

Then you can go to the HP support site and find out what kind of BIOS it has (or maybe when it is powering up) and see the list of beep codes:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02222922

There might be more lists if you poke around.

You can also find the manuals for your system where there might be clues.

If you don't see the answer I wonder if it would make sense to ask in the HP community where the HP experts and sometimes actual HP support people hang out?

The details of your system on the HP support page will tell you the amount of memory the system supports and maybe what kind you need.

After you find out how much memory the system will support you can see if there is room for more.

If you want to add more memory I would visit here and let their scanner take a look at your system and what it suggests:

Thank you for the response, Mightwiz.  I will look at that possibility.  I didn't know there was a bios battery.  'Preciate it!

Thanks for the response Joseibarra!  Yes, I am trying to figure out the beeps and whether adding memory would solve the problems I have on this computer, or at least make it a little faster and more responsive.  The serial number is:  CNH719189T   Will follow the crucial.com link and see if I can buy more memory.

Hamluis, I'm sorry I haven't been able to paste the Speccy test results on this site.  Is there another method for sending it?  I was able to attach the MiniToolbox results but don't know if you could retrieve the file.  Thank you for your time anyway.

You cannot copy the URL for the Speccy Snapshot...and paste that into a post?

Almost 100% of other members...seem to be able to manage that...take a look at some other topics where such is requested and accomplished.

Suggestions re content catalog index/datrabase errors:  https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/how-to-i-fix-error-41801-content-index-catalog-is/d3ab14d2-d123-4a09-8400-48946b562c9a

See post #3, I would replace the CMOS battery...there is nothing in the data posted that points in any clear direction.  Replacing the CMOS battery and resetting the system defaults...may resolve apparent issues.

The index/catalog errors are fairly common and have nothing to do with hardware.  The controller error probably relates to your flash drive.  Temps are good.  2GB RAM is adequate, but should have been increased to 4 before now..  Even with 32-bit Windows 7...2GB just is not a very intelligent option.

Just for the hell of it...you might simply remove your RAM modules, then reinsert them...and see it the 3 beeps continue.

Louis
