I'm not looking for any really involved with lots of bells/whistles or web/social integrations- just a basic CRM (think simple) that can sort 5-6 basic types of customers, the latest notes from telephone/email conversations.  It'd be a real plus if it were cloud-based so my remote boss could log in and see what's happening, but he's adamant on not paying a subscription service.

Any ideas?

Hmm, well if you're looking for simple yet quality software, there's a brand called Less Annoying CRM that may be a good fit. It's supposed to be straightforward to use and meets the basic needs of most salespeople. These other options might help too, depending on any other features that you may be looking for.

Based on my own experience I can say that the gold standard is Salesforce. Specialists from KeyNode Solutions https://www.keynodesolutions.com/ helped us a lot with Salesforce integration and implementation. Their managed services division was created precisely to troubleshooting issues and provide ongoing Salesforce support. We have used many different CRMs but Salesforce is one of the best CRMs we used.
