Hello,

I’ve been directed to this forum after at least 3 of your volunteers on this site have come up short when trying to pinpoint the root of my computer’s woes.  In an effort to preserve what little sanity (and hair) I still have left, I am *this*  -->  <-- close to formatting my C drive and starting over with a fresh install of Windows.

By no means intentionally – I can’t speak highly enough about the quality of help and level of dedication from some of my previous helpers on BleepingComputer.com – I’ve been given what amounts to a huge run-around as I’ve tried for months to figure out why my computer is behaving the way it is.  As I said above, I know there’s a simple solution that can solve my woes; but my analytical mind wants to understand the *why* of this whole situation, or else I can see it happening all over again – weeks, months, or years down the road.

Anyway, what I’ve been experiencing, I can best describe as prolonged periods of sluggishness, unresponsive, or just general incompetence on the part of my computer.  Memory usage often balloons before I can get much accomplished; and many times even simple copy & paste operations into MS Word take minutes to complete (getting stuck on the dreaded hourglass with the “Not Responding” header).

At the request and/or recommendation of those earlier helpers on BleepingComputer, I’ve already run a slew of diagnostic tests, but so far none has revealed a smoking gun or been conclusive.

Please note that my computer has also already been certified free of any malware…

“Is there anything else that I can help you with?  Otherwise, I will conclude your topic as resolved, since there is no malware active in your computer at this time.

Good luck resolving the memory leak/CPU issues.”

…by the helper in this thread:

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/673077/possible-undetected-malware;-firefox-memory-leak-and-drain-of-system-resources/#entry4463685

Hard drive health tested out OK; RAM memory tests out OK, and has been deemed sufficient for my primary purpose of browsing; problems are similar regardless of which browser I use (although MS Internet Explorer is hands down far worse than Firefox).

If anyone is willing to “take up the case” and provide me with any help, advice, or suggestions that might lead to me finally fixing this computer’s woes, [my hair and] I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks.

Don't necessarily blame you.  I'm sure I've done so at some point (without consequence), but I'd like to be able to provide you with an up-to-date answer.

I'm about at the end of my rope for tonight, though, so I'll run that check at some point tomorrow and post back to you.

Thanks for responding!

I actually read through your Malware aremoval post in full

I somewhar agree with the hard look at RAM....but not entirely.......have you tested the ram ?

Memtest

Then there are scheduled tasks.....tasks that run at obscure times.....

One task mentions Norton

It has been on your pc at some time or another.

Delete the task/s

Also run Norton Removal Tool

Also another mentioning pcdoctor

delete the task

Do you use Real Player ?...if not...get rid of it....and also delete the task.

https://www.groovypost.com/howto/cancel-delete-windows-7-scheduled-task/

if Windows is overloaded, the problem is probably not applications, but processes--threads of code running in the background. So click the Processes tab.

you might notice that the Processes tab lacks a Description column--a seemingly serious deficiency if you're trying to figure out what a process does. But there's a solution. Right-click the process you're wondering about and select Go to details.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Thank you all for your responses; I have performed (or attempted) all of your recommendations and am reporting as follows…

  • I performed both Disk Cleaner on drive C and then Checkdisk.  No reports from the latter when my computer booted back up, though, so I have to assume everything is fine.
  • I checked my memory again, as I had done earlier.  I used Windows Memory Diagnostics, though, instead of the tool that was linked to.  In any event, the result was: “No memory errors were detected”.
  • I addressed (and deleted) the following tasks: Norton WSC Integration; PCDoctor (4 separate scheduled tasks); and Real Player (although RP was not present in Control Panel when I tried to remove the application itself).
  • I attempted to run the Norton Removal Tool.  However, this gave the popup error message:  “Alert: 550 /public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe: No such file or directory”.  The only “Norton” application that showed up in my Control Panel was Norton Utilities 16.0 (a completely separate program from Norton Antivirus, which I assume is fine).

Frankly...I don't see a lot wrong with this system.

There is a fix for the "content index/catalog is corrupt" error...see Corrupt Index Fix, Aura - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/565239/dell-laptop-running-slowly/page-2#entry3620243 .

I would also run the chkdsk /r command, followed by the sfc /scannow command.

I'm somewhat skeptical that following those steps would be particularly worthwhile, as the thread ends 07 February 2015 with the user stating she still has the same problem.

I will, however, run chkdsk /r and then sfc /scannow , and report on my results...

(And I'd gladly post a screenshot of Task Manager showing Memory Usage - undoubtedly due to Firefox - the next time my computer acts up again.)

You have 4GB RAM installed...not a single process has used more than 600MB RAM..if you think that's not enough RAM, then add some is all that I can suggest.

As for the fix suggested Aura...he's a lot more knowledgeable than I am and I have confidence in his advice.

As for Firefox...I run Firefox without any add-ons...and it causes me no problems with memory usage.  Your max RAM data reported via Speccy...does not seem out of line.

Thank you for the reference.  I have sought out Aura's advice as to whether the same advice might be pertinent to my problem.

In the meantime, I will follow through on my promise to run chkdsk /r and sfc /scannow .

Finally finished those two scans...

  • chkdsk /r, although it ran for 4 and a half hours, finished and booted up the computer without ever displaying a result.
  • sfc /scannow, after only about an hour, reported that it "did not find any integrity violations."

Not really sure where to turn now.  :/

Yes, thanks.  I did report on the results of those steps in Post #6, before the MiniToolbox and Speccy results.
