So the PC turns on put the screen stays black one of the things I read to try was resetting memory 

but what does that mean exactly

If the screen is completely black and you never see anything on it, it's likely one of the following:

  • bad connection (check at each end)
  • bad display (try on a different computer or try a different display)
  • bad display adapter
  • bad cable (try a different one)
