Up until today everything on my laptop has been fine. But suddenly a raft of issues have presented themselves.

The first thing is my video playback on websites does not work. Static images show but fail to play and the play button and captions are altered. I checked Adobe Active X installed and updated - it worked but next time it didn't work again.

The second thing is my MS Word 2013 and Notepad failed to work. Suddenly I received strange error messages. The banner at the top of documents was reporting rubbish that it was an unlicensed product etc, and had to close down. I've just gone through updating Word and the documents were working OK.

Then I decided to try shutting down and restarting in Safe Mode to check everything out, but I can't shut down or restart the computer.

Of course the first thing I suspected was a virus. But after scanning with Malwarebytes everything was clean. Also Malwarebytes seems to work fine and not abort. However, I am not sure.

What is going on? All suggestions gratefully received.

Mod edit :-  Moved from Audio/Video to 'Am I infected?'

Report from Saruman:

"I installed Windows updates and now it seems to have corrected everything."

Thanks for letting us know. Threads are not normally closed unless there's a particular reason to do so, more recent posts will just move its position down the list.
