CPU spiking to 100% - computer freezing

Hello and thank you in advance for looking into this.

 

For the past 2 or 3 months my computer has been freezing intermittently (once or twice a day).  I have a dual monitor setup and this generally happens when I am using AutoCad on the one screen and then I'll have some youtube running on the other.  The computer will hang for anywhere between 10 seconds and a couple of minutes.  If I run the task manager I will see a spike in the CPU usage to 100% coinciding with the hang.

 

It will then resolve itself sometimes with the screens going black and then everything resumes or other times the videos and everything just starts playing from where it left off. 

 

Of late it has been happening far more frequently and the computer may be on the way out.  If so that is fine, it's time for an upgrade anyway but I'd like to be in front of any imminent death so that I can take the requisite precautions

 

I have run AVG, Malwarebytes, diskscan, defragged the hard drive, updated (or checked if they are required) all the drivers I think i need.

 

Here are my specs below:

 

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 

Intel® Core™ i5-2500 CPU @ 3.3 GHz

NVIDIA GeForce GT 430

8 GB DDR3 RAM

Used space: 1.31 TB

Free space:  642 GB

Capacity 1.81 TB

 

I have run the utility suggested here on another post whilst I was researching the problem. (Diskcheckup).  I have attached 2 screenshots of the result.

 

I have also attached 3 screencaps of the cpu spiking to 100% whereby the compute freezes.

 

I have backed up all of my data.

 

I'm at a bit of a loss so any help will be much appreciated.

 

If there is anything else I need do please let me know.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

As mentioned your disk is showing several bad blocks so it needs to be tested with Seatools or preferably the mfg disk diagnostic utility.

 

Also you are running two different AV programs. 

AVAST

Malwarebytes version 3.3.1.2183

 

It is not recommend using MBAM version 3 with any antivirus program. MBAM is trying to be a full featured anti-virus/anti-malware tool program. Even though It is a very good program, it can interfere with other installed anitviurs programs and cause issues.

 

Also recommend updating your GPU driver. Please create a Restore point before hand.

For the record...Malwarebytes is not considered an AV program, no matter what the puffery put forth by them may indicate. I know of no documented conflicts between it and an officially-designated AV program.  I do know that the nag screens for the allegedly "free" version...are quite annoying (version 3.3).

Thanks for the article. This is only related to the full version of MBAM 3.3 or higher. Thanks for the article, however I have experienced and helped with many issues caused by running the full version along with other AV programs so it is always worth testing IMHO.

Model Number: WDC WD20EZRX-00D8PB0 merits replacement, IMO.
 
I've been using Seatools on drives for over 20 years now, as the Seagate empire has continued to grow.  I've never had a drive fail the long test and later display performance that contradicted the results of the long generic.  It's a small sample size and no diagnostic can guarantee drive failure...but why would anyone wait for a guaranteed failure? The results speak for themselves.

I'll go down and order a replacement desktop today.  Is it just the hard drive that is failing?

 

I was thinking when I buy the new the new system I can install a new HDD on this machine and do a clean install and let the kids use it.

Any computer system...has various components that can seriously impact system problems:  PSU, hard drive, fans, RAM, etc.

 

IMO...by far, the most likely component to develop problems...is the hard drive.  I don't like to say that any one component is more important than the others...but trying to run Windows with a troublesome hard drive is very unreasonable.  The O/S and all programs/data...are on the hard drive.  The hard drive is the house...in which Windows and all programs/data...reside.

 

Replacing a system because of a possibly failing/failed hard drive...is like buying a new car because you suddenly develop a flat tire.  Once the tire is replaced or repaired...all is good and machine  resumes providing transport capability.
